You could make a "beginner" shaman, with fewer spells and minions
than the
average stereotypical "powerful villian"...

It's up to you, really, but I would say it depends on how much is
left from
the body. True forms are normal spirits, but the flesh ones would retain
all abilities
of the "former ocupant" of the body.

Remember, whatever you come up with in your House Rules, is totally up to you.
Us, we variate their spell bonuses at least, and occasionally give them
benefits of certain other types of spirits (depending on the game).

You could consider the "Insect Shamans" to have something in common with the
"Loa", from the POV of game mechanics at least. Sure they don't gain benefits
to conjuring "normal spirits", but perhaps they gain other benefits instead.

Good question, especially if a "Good Merge" is attained. I could see some
Mantid's having this, a way of using the "Mutations" concept from CalFree, and
giving the "new ability" an explanation at the same time. Though admittedly,
the idea of giving a Mantid Spirit Sorcery Skill does frighten me somewhat.
