Because there's no seal between the piston and piston wall. If there was, there would be
friction... hence, a frictionless piston won't allow a seal, so the explosion (combustion)
doesn't force the piston down.

The explosion would still force the piston down, even if there were no rings or oil in the
engine - it's an excersize in hydrodynamics. As the area through which the gas has to pass
through (the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall) decreases, the pressure
increases. Increasing the pressure of a gas requires work, as does forcing the piston
down. The energy created from the combustion will be divided between the two. The reason
that using grease on a 'seal' works is because it doesn't compress, and the energy
required to move it is far greater than the energy required to move the entire piston.

In short, you'll still need to use something like grease to create a seal, but dikoting
the cylinder MAY allow the piston to move more freely (alternately it may have adverse
effects upon the grease seal, or a bit of both).

Dikoting the engine will cause it to run cooler (as not only can the dikote survive higher
temperatures, it will also dissipate heat quicker). The dikoted engine will therefore be
able to run significantly above its standard energy throughput, assuming other components
take the strain. Note that I still wouldn't increase the effectiveness of NOX as listed in
rigger 3, as it's so far above the real-life effects of NOX that it's just funny.
