The short story anthology "Into the Shadows" was mentioned several
times this week, but I have never read it, and cannot find it anywhere.
Could some kind soul email with the ISBN number so I can order it?

And where the hell did TopCat go?! Did I miss something important on
my summer vacation, or did he just dissapear and not tell any of us?

Disappeared, I think (I didn't see any "goodbye cruel list" message of
him :) not long after his Manifesto didn't go down all that well with the
rest of us...

Ow! Watch where you throw that stuff ;)

TopCat just stopped showing up. Maybe he had a school
account. Or, maybe he's taking time to write a 400 page
manifesto just for Sasquatch :)

OK, I'm new here and this isn't the first I've heard of the mysterious
TOPCAT manifesto.
What exactly was the deal?
As near as I can puzzle it out, this guy posted something that seriously
disturbed a lot of people, and he was flamed out of existance?
Any of you old timers want to enlighten us?

TopCat was fairly decent at debating and storytelling and
gave me quite a few good ideas. However, at one point he
posted a fairly lengthy discourse on his views on
roleplaying and shadowrun. He meant it as an informational
"get to know me" kind of thing. But, it blew up, as some
people didn't like his views and felt it was a pretty
egotistical action, and others weren't to thrilled at
having several pages of email crammed in their accounts.
BTW, I thought his manifesto was kinda interesting.

The moral? (IMHO) Don't force your opinions on others
unsolicited. And, keep it short.

Sounds like Good advice in general!
Any idea where I could find a copy of this manifesto?
I'd be interested in seeing it?
If anyone has one, go ahead and send via private email - since posting it
seems like a Bad plan. :-)

Yeah... He was contributing for at least a month after the
manifesto thing settled. Maybe Sasquatch *did* get him ;)

Oh, just someone who fancied himself a "master roleplayer" and posted a huge
treatise on how to role play, how Shadowrun should be run, etc.

Just curious, but is there a reason people like this keep dropping the

TopCat, AKA Bob Ooton, was an okay guy. He had strong views on several
subjects, not the least magically-active folks vs. street sams as I
recall, and on Sun, 19 May 1996 01:14:53 -0500 he wrote a text called:

The TopCat Manifesto
or "What I like to rant about and why"

The intention behind this was "that everyone who seeks my opinion on a
subject can get it easily."

I saved his post, but unfortunately a HD crash some three months later
has left me with a beginning and an end, and missing a part of the middle.
He didn't so much get flamed for this, as he got told other peoples'
views (both about the points he'd made and about getting such a large post
devoid of any really useful info without asking for it). I haven't seen
him around since this summer, so my guess is he got tired of the list and
ubsubbed.

> Any of you old timers want to enlighten us?

*feels this refers to him* Watch who you're calling old-timers! Just
because some of us have been on this list for years doesn't mean we're
old-timers!

Erm, wait a sec... I don't think there are all that many people around
who were there when I first joined the list, are there? Sure, Granite's
back, but what about the others? *stops before this goes too far* :)

Was someone looking for the ISBN # of _Into the Shadows_? Well the
original, Sam Verner story one that I bought in England is not the
standard novel size, but its number is:

As you can see, Eudora creates a file and dumps it into my Eudora directory.
Please ask your sysop on how to stop this. Thanks.

There was a 'purge' about four, five (?) months back.
I'd asked Topcat if the volume had gone *way* down, and he told me that
the list had purged everyone, and that he wasn't re-subbing.
He didn't seem to pleased with the list, in general. (I can't even
remember reading the Manifesto, but I can barely remember how to get to
work, which is a five minute walk from here...)

I'm getting two-part messages -- one is the actual message, the other is
called "binary data, file unknown, type unknown" by my mailer.

Was that at the time when Mark's office looked like it was located in
Beirut?

So that's what happened to him. Thanks for letting us in on this secret :)

I could post what I have of it, if anyone's interested *hides under

Yep... There's definately a MIME attachment.
(And using elm, ,that is REALLY irritating....)

Also, Caric is also sending his stuff as MIME.
(Please... send plain text.)

THANK YOU!!!!!!

I found out why it was doing that.

I had accidentally left "Use MIME when sending messages" checked in my internet
mail settings. I thought I had turned that off, but 5 installs in 2 weeks will get you a
little confused!

I apologize for the inconvience.

(Will be embarrassed if not solution, but I think it is.)

a UUENCODED attachment.

I seem to remember a discussion on this subject in the past, and the
solution may have involved deselecting a check box labled
