A couple of Days ago I posted a message about the properties of military body
armor. I was referring to the standard issue 'flak-jacket' that is in
widespread use with regular army and marine corps units.

Well, yesterday while I found an article in the Armed Forces Journal
International about 'Ranger' special operations body armor. This stuff, in use
with US Special Ops forces (SF, Rangers, SEALS) is made from the latest type of
Kevlar, and uses a plate type insert. Apparently it saw use in Somalia, and
according to the article, it stopped a 7.62mm round taken in the back, and left
a 'pancake sized bruise.' In another incidence, a soldier was hit with an
unexploded RPG-7 and knocked through a wall, but was not killed.

the magazine is sent directly to my company, so I assume that it's fairly
trustorthy, ie. not one of those 'Soldier of Fortune' types.

This is not ``standard issue'' stuff to the regular line troops. The stuff
they wear is mostly kevlar with hard inserts, with a water repellant shell.
Also known as ``Type II'' armor. It'll stop some pistol rounds (Type II
will stop 9mm Para but not .45 ACP); it's like butter to most rifle rounds.
