Hey! That was our idea!

Just kidding, but we were thinking about exactly that over break. One of the
members of SWO left yesterday to teach english in Japan; he and I were
discussing the possibility of writing a Japan sourcebook and seeing if
FASA would buy it. Nothing has gotten off the ground on our side yet.
Hopefully 1 of 2 things will happen; 1, He will return from Japan this
summer with tons of source material and we can pump it out in a week and
make loads of money, or 2, FASA will beat us to it and we'll have to cough
up some hard-earned cash for it.

Most likely it'll be #2.

I had thought that myself. I think that FASA's looking for a competent
author to write-up the necessary material, and he/she'd have to live there
and understand his/her surroundings, or live elsewhere and have a thorough
understanding of the present culture and geography and can make educated
predictions of changes to come...

Quite a task. Immig and Roemer did a bang-up job (as far as I've been
able to read...damn work and school...) covering Germany...

Madagascar, anyone?

Oh yeah, just like they oh-so-accurately described Seattle and the Sea-Tac
area in the rules and several modules. I can still remember how incredulous
we all were when Ed (the GM) said (and I paraphrase here) "You can see the
moonlight glistening off the shores of Lake Washington." We were in Downtown
Tacoma. We said "Bullshit".

It is rumored that Fujimi Shobo, a Japanese licensee of Shadowrun, is
planning about Japan Sourcebook for Japanese consumers. But there are
some problems.

1. Fujimi was announcing they would publish Japanese Edition of Shadowrun
"soon" in the early days of last year. But it is not out yet.

2. Most of RPG consumers in Japan are low and middle teen. So Fujimi
will write Japan Sourcebook targeting these consumers.

3. I don't see Fujimi has skillful writers. Fujimi's products will
hardly maintain quality as high as Germany Sourcebook.

4. Last but not least. Translating Japanese into English is some more
nightmarish. When I wrote some research materials for Tokyo Citybook
(TORG / WEST END GAMES) two years ago, it was a tough job. It will
be very difficult to translate Fujimi's Japan Sourcebook into English.

So I think we'd better to write Japan Sourcebook by ourselves.
If anyone have some questions about my country, I'll do something to
answer. (though, I cannot write English so fast, so my answer may be late)

I personally doubt it. You might want to check the OLD records with my
conversations with Tom. I believe I posted stuff on this last summer. I
think Tom said that it was in "long term development". Which means almost
never. I think the shaman sourcebook (in the same post) will be out sooner!
Actually, probably another 2-3 years.

HOWEVER...

If you want to do it, call them and ask! They may say "we don't have anyone
working on it, you're welcome to try, good luck". Or they may say that the
book that the Japanese Corp is doing will be translated eventually. Look
at German sourcebook, f'r instance. That's been around for over a year now!
(Just not in English)
