I have been getting bombarded by lots of junk e-mail. Is that $500 fine
thingy for real? How does it work? and most importantly have you collected
any cash yet?

regards

Bill

Well, according to the mailing list policy, owl@********.com owes each of
these 3 lists: NERPS, ShadowTK, and ShadowRN $1999 american. Its legally
binding and I'm leaving it up to Mark Imbracio to inforce. He has access
to the machine that ShadowRN runs on and can better track the offender
down. The problem is I believe owlsnest.com is one of those providers that
are designed for spam email, so the chances of getting this guy are slim to
none. I find it a shame that people do this, it was the fourth such spam
email I had receieved that day, and also the fourth complaint I sent out.
I urge all of you to write to the postmaster of any ISP that sends out spam
email. If they get complaints, most are good about removing the offenders
account.

I think it only works if you put it in writing (as is the FAQ), that posting
to the list implies that you understand and agree with all FAQ points...

Including spamming the mailing list.

Personal spams are more difficult.
(You could put in your .sig that they aren't welcome and anyone doing so
will be charged, but getting recompense would be another matter....)

No, they need to have been informed. It's not good putting it in writing,
and then hiding the FAQ away. OTH, they have to be members to post... and
they get the FAQ upon subscribing, so you've got a good case. Note that
they don't have to have actually read the FAQ, or even received it at the
time of posting.

|Forgive my 'net ignorance, but what is *spamming*?

Remember the Monty Python sketch?
SPAM SPAM Beans chips SPAM eggs and SPAM....
(And all the Vikings in the Cafe would start singing SPAM SPAM SPAM
Wonderful SPAM, drowning out all the other voices....)

Spamming on usenet is cross-posting irrelevant information to as many
newsgroups as you can fit on the newsgroup line.....
(And then some)

Spamming here is sending totally unrelated crap like commercial
advertisements, get rich quick schemes and (Sorry Bull) Virus Alert
messages.
