Guys, there was a new gun we were discussing a while
back, a modern assault rifle the US military was
looking at, with all sorts of bells and whistles.
5.56mm, I think, with this grenade launcher attached,
and it could break down into a separate rifle/launcher
etc. It had some kind of acronym name - OICW or
something, maybe? Does anyone know what I'm talking
about? If so, know of any websites where I can find
data and pictures?

Thanks. :)

I know what you're talking about but not where to find any info since
from what I'd heard the project was scrapped due to too many of them
blowing up during testing. Not too sure on info more than that....

According to Rand Ratinac, on Sun, 19 May 2002 the word on the street was...

That would be it, yes. IIRC, it stands for Objective Individual Combat
Weapon, but I'm not 100% sure on that one -- the US uses too many of those
acronyms to keep track of them all even if you're interested in the
equipment they're applied to :)

Anyway, this is supposed to be a 5.56 mm assault "rifle" (with a really
short barrel) with a 20 mm grenade launcher that fires what in SR terms
would be called air-timed grenades, plus a sophisticated sight/range finder
unit. The whole thing turned out to be far too heavy (~7 kg) and bulky for
general issue, plus the sight was too complicated for quick use under
combat conditions, not to mention that, as I recall, various parts have a
bad tendency to break down.

IOW, this is going the same route as the SPIW, ACR and other US infantry
weapon programs with spiffy acronym names...

I can't point you to any web sites, but wouldn't a web search for "OICW"
turn up some hits?

That'll have probably the most detailed information in one spot you can find. HKPRO.
Great website.

Anyway, I better get back to lurking...

And, if you want to adapt this monstrosity to SR, make it a semi-auto
grenade launcher with an underbarrel assault rifle :). It would probably
also have a built-in smartlink, rangefinder and air-timed grenade link.

Oh, I'm sure it would. Just wasn't sure if OICW was
the correct acronym.

And before you say anything, yes, I've realised that I
could have just done the search anyway. I'm an idiot.
So what's new?
