I would agree that adding all of the original message is bad, but everyone should
certainly add at least a relevant portion of the original message, so everyone knows
what is being replied to.

This is covered in the FAQ.

I had a yahoo account for a while, and it was getting everything
just fine. 'Course, I deleted 99% of the messages after I read 'em.

The reason mailers allow quoting original messages is because that will
make it _much_ easier for the recipient to understand what's going on. On
a list like ShadowRN, where you can get anywhere between 50 and 200 posts
a day about all kinds of different subjects, quoting is just about a
_necessity_ if you want to keep sane.

It would be much appreciated if you could do the same thing, for the
reasons I just explained. If you have limited space at your provider, you
can do several things -- for example, check your mail more often; delete
all messages except those you absolutely want to keep (and those you
should be able to save, download to your computer at home, and erase); get
a POP3 account somewhere; or open an account that provides more space for
email.

(This message was sent to the list on purpose, for others with the same
problem/view as Sean.)

Actually, the single best thing you can do to save _space_ is to get the
list in digest form. Each message has at the front of it a fairly large
header, which you won't see unless you poke around. This header is saved in
the message, and it takes up a large amount of space when you get the mail
in bulk, like this list generates.

If you only check email once a day, getting the digest version will probably
save you about 20% of the disk space.

(Of course, digest version is harder to read, and not as convienent to reply
to (well, not in Unix, under ELM, with a suitable filter, but in general))

Oh, the one thing people on this list CAN do to help reduce the amount of
space mail from this list consumes is stop using those 20 line signatures,
especially for a one-line post.

Shoot! I guess I'll have to get rid of the AVI movie clip of my name at the
end of my messages :P
