Subject: Let's have a War!
Date: Thu, 9 Jan 1997 01:12:02 -0500
A while ago I noticed FASA started to have major world events once a
year and ways to explore it. With the Publication of Portfolio of a
Dragon I realized that the UCAS could now be retold as a seperate
sourcebook with points of interest now to help generate enough interest
for sales. Living in the South I wondered what could do the same for us,
and then it came to me - A War! Aztlan has been resting uncomfortably
for a while now and the tension has been growing ever since they took
part of Texas. This was it. I WANT A WAR!!!
To keep with the trend of openess all the changes bring to Shadowrun
this would be a "Silent War," one where no official state of war exists.
For a change of pace, the CAS would be the aggressors instead of the
infamous Aztlan government. To keep support from other countries CAS has
kept their actions secret and deniable. This situation would make for a
great background for shadowrunners, mercs and CAS military groups.
Another element would also be added to Shadowrun, war in the 6th world.
I have declared it my personal campaign to spread the concept of
this "Silent War" to as many players (especially in the South) as I can.
Besides if FASA (hint, hint, Mike) ever published anything on this I
would love to know I started a war. Now if that ain't an acheivement, I
don't know what is.
With the UCAS above wanting us to return (yeah, right), NAN and
Caribean Legue on the sides and Azltan's power base increasing below it
was about time to feel the pressure. I would love to hear from others in
the CAS region (or what used to be) on this idea. It is part of my
background now and would enjoy feedback (any, hey I'm open) on this to
flesh it out even more.

How bout a silent war between the UCAS and CAS? I started one in my
campaign and it's been pretty cool. I mean why does everyone always pick
on Atzlan?

Cuz the Azzies play so dirty. Then there's that land issue. I don't
think Texas will ever let that one go. I also feel that UCAS in the end
wouldn't commit to an all out war for reunification. The cost would be
too high as if it wasn't before. Now trying to undermine the CAS so they
would have to rely on the UCAS again just so the UCAS could exploit the
South is a viable background.
The idea of the UCAS wanting the South returned now is more
threatening of what one man in power could attempt to do. For practical
reasons this could never be a full war between the two. And any nation
that liked the unstabalized condition of either nation will help any such
conflict along as it is in their best interest. That also means the the
Azzies would be moving their borders again if the CAS was fighting on
another front. I wouldn't be surprised if the UCAS actually likes the CAS
being a buffer between them.

Because Atzlan is full of evil, sicko, Blood-Spirit summoning freaks...

And the CAS is just full of Hicks...:):)

<The above line was just a joke, please take it as such, all you southern

Besides, I can see the UCAS going for the Indian Territories before the
CAS... and I can't see them doing much of anything until Bug City is dealt
with. That has got to be tying up a huge amount of UCAS military resources.

This sounds like a great Idea to me other likely places I can think this =

wanted to keep it really small scale maybe highlite the San Fran situation =
with the resistance movement there opening a into full scale guerilla war =
between the Orklanders and the Imperial Marines.

A full scale WWII style war wouldn't be very useful to shadowrunners. Too =
much firepower on both sides for then to even be used effectively as =
special forces. But, a nice little shadow war works wellwith each side =
sending Shadowrunners and Mercenaries into each others back yards to go =
for a knock out blow that will allow a quick 2 or 3 day invasion to =

This is a good idea you should pick up on it FasaMike.

Because Aztlan is made out as the "bad corporation" (and Ares
Macrotechnology is the "good corporation").

Rumblings of a possible CAS/Aztlan conflict may find their way into the
material for the Target: UCAS book, depending on the decisions of development
and editorial. Whether or not they'll develop beyond rumor will likely depend
on reader response.

The UCAS isn't going to be starting any wars any time soon. They have enough
internal problems to deal with right now and they need peace more than
anything.

Well... There's nothing like a war to unite people... It's the time
_after_ the war when things get dangerous for the government. Look at the
Gulf War, for example -- there were protests before it began, but when it
got going most of the western world cheered for Bush. It didn't help him
win a second term as US president, though, because by the time elections
rolled around everybody had discovered that they still had it as bad as
before the war.
The same sort of thing is going on in Yugoslavia (Serbia) right now:
during the civil war, people didn't complain because "it's for the war."
Now the war is over, and they see how things really are in their own
country.

If you ask me, war is a good diversion from internal politics, and if
started at the right time it could give you just what you need on the
internal political scene.

It's also good for the economy. If you win that is. But again Japan
and then West Germany weren't doing so bad.

Wasn't that part of the reason World War II started? I mean, after WWI,
Germany's economy was crushed and the nation was headed down the toilet by
the time Hitler came to power.

Hitler was a megalomaniac who actively tried to plunge the world into
another war, because he wanted to be in control of a country at war. He
didn't do it because he wanted to avenge Germany's defeat, or even to win,
he just wanted to fight a war. The fact that Germany was in ruins after
WWI did help him achieve that ambition, though, because he had something
to offer to discontent people -- even though the vast majority didn't
know what he was _really_ out to do; nationalism helps a lot, in any case.
