Has anyone [that's you, Admin and GridSec] figured out why the list keeps
sending doubles and dropping posts? Just curious.

AFAIK, Adam is aware of it. I'm also hoping that Mark is aware of it. I
don't know if they've found the problem yet.

FWIW, it might not have anything to do with the list software. Remember,
another huricane just brushed the East coast of the US, and emails passing
through that part of the country are probably bouncing around. (The
listserv is in Washington, D.C.) I've definitely noticed some odd lags
(I'm getting the answer to a question before the question) that I'm
attributing to East coast problems.

On the other hand, the Mailman Lite may be a little buggy...

My advice: patience. Something like this happens about every six months.
It will pass :)

The maintainer of MailMan is aware of the problem - it has occured on his
own lists - and is looking into the solution. When that arrives we should
be upgrading ASAP.

Speaking for GridSec, that's not really our concern, nor within our
ability to fix... It's Adam's (and Mark's) job to keep the list running
smoothly -- he/they deal(s) with electronic problems, as it were, while
GridSec deals with human problems. GridSec can't do anything about double
posts if we wanted to.

(I should note that this problem seems to be peculiar to some people, BTW.
I myself get the occasional double message, but almost never more than one
every couple of days. Some people, though, apparently get almost every
message double. I have no idea what causes this :( )

Well, maybe Adam can do something about the hurricane. If not, I'm sure Mark
will see what he can do.

Or, maybe we could all pitch in and buy the full version.

Whatever; it's not like it bothers me much.

I don't have the problem most of the time, except when I get
positively flooded with old messages. I've noticed that my mail
reader has deleted duplicate messages on occasion, so if they both
show up before I check my mail, I don't see both of them. Oddly
enough, a disproportionate number of the duplicates I see deleted seem
to come from docwagon101@*****.com... I wonder if he's testing out
another way of increasing noise to signal ratio...

check to see if your replying to all, it may double the post that way, you
may also be bccing or cc'ing yourself unknowlingly, some mailers do that by
default.

Amusingly enough, I recently received a message Dvixen had sent me three
_months_ prior to its receipt. But that wasn't even a list message--just
Hotmail hiccupping. [Or @****.] But I get an absurd number of posts that are
days or weeks old. I think that, at least, is my e-mail server. If I wasn't
so paranoid, I'd just use my personal e-mail, not this freemail garbage.

There is no full version. Mainman is free Open Source GPL'ed software,
supported by the community..

Hey man, don't profane the name!

And shut up about the tests, or I'll have to sick my
Mob pals on ya.

8-)

Seriously, though, I seem to be getting a lot of
doubles from most people. And no, I'm not doing
anything quirky that would be sending people doubles.
Not that I'm aware of, anyway. And I use reply, not
reply all, so that's not it.

*Doc' smiles weakly. "No, really. It's not my fault.
And I'm sticking with that story!"*

Normally I only use free Open Source stuff, but
oooh, if only we could buy listserv, it's so nice!
I use Listserv Lite and it works wonderfully, the
archiving is the nicest part IMHO - pity it wouldn't
work for shadowrn - too many subscribers for the limits
they put on it :(

We just pitched Listserv Lite for that very reason, in January.
