Okay, I don't know what exactly is going on, but I have had messages arrive
from Gurth and David that are now occasionally "loosing track of the page
size". The normal Posting/reply ">>>" are suddenly all over the
place.
Cobra's letters reached me fine. MOST of the postings have reached me fine.

Admin/GridSec??? Any Ideas???

No, I haven't changed my mail settings.

I've recently been informed that the 7-bit encoding in my messages can
cause problems with certain Windows-based mailers (like Outlook),
preventing them from quoting the message properly for some reason. If
you ask me this is either a bug or even a deliberate measure by those
mailers' programmers, because most other mailers don't seem to have any
trouble with quoting my messages.

There is, however, not much I can do about it on this end; I can set
Pegasus to "Allow 8-bit MIME encoding" but when I clicked on the check
box, this warning popped up:

*** PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE CAREFULLY! ***

8-bit data is formally illegal in Internet Mail and although many systems
permit it, you should be aware that its use can potentially cause
considerable problems for Internet sites using older mail systems and
gateways.

Pegasus Mail allows you to generate messages using the MIME 8-bit
encoding format (no other 8-bit encoding makes any sense for Internet
mail) but you do so at your own risk and responsibility. Pegasus Mail's
author expressly recommends that you do not use this option unless you
are very sure of what you are doing, and will neither accept
responsibility for the consequences of your using it, nor will provide
technical support for it.

which once more leads me to suspect the problem is in other peoples'
mailers, not mine...

I don't know what their problem is, I use Outlook 98 and have no
problem with your post, as you should be able to see in the quoted section.

Gurth, I don't think it is you. We use the exact same mailer, and I have not had any
problems (none that I know of). Keith uses AOL, so it is no a Windows problem either.
Keith, if it continues, contact AOL tech support.

(BTW, I sent this to the list in case anyone else is having problems. If you are, let us
know.)

SOME Windows-based mailers. It stands to reason that Pegasus has no
problem quoting messages created with other copies of Pegasus... Perhaps
AOL's mailer is one of those that somehow don't function properly because
of the 7-bit encoding.

Nope, all the problems have apparently self-migrated away from the 'Rig
here....hmmm....(looking at Mike's computer only a few feet away)....wonder
where it'll show up next ;)

And verily, did Gurth hastily scribble thusly...

HERE HERE!!!
Couldnb't have put it better myself...
<Round of applause>

Well, e-mail is an industry standard. That standard *IS* that it uses 7bit
data (All that is required for all the standard ASCII characters (128).

If mailer writers decide to try breaking that standard, then they deserve to
go bust. In other words, they probably have the *OPTION* in the software,
but it is only an option. No-one would be foolish enough to break standards
like that because the program wouldn't sell or even WORK.

They probably need to reset their config options.
