The Lord of the Rings is, AFAIK, unfinished... I've heard rumors that
there are actually all three parts but I've only seen the first one on
tape, or on those rare, rare times where it's made it to TV.

Wizards is another one of his animated films. It has no affiliation with
Lord of the Rings, but rather is a really, really cool fantasy (with a tad
of sci-fi thrown in too) adventure. It has IMHO the absolute best ending
I have ever seen...nothing beats it.

If you can find it, rent it.

There's also an RPG based on the whole idea too.

AFAIK there's only one part of it, and that spans the first book and half
of the second, so the full trilogy would take up 2 films and probably
last about 4 hours.

Does anyone remember an animated film called "Flight of the Dragons"? I
loved that film, thought it was the best fantasy animated feature when I
saw it, though that was a long time ago and I was young and innocent...

There are three books but the film covers up to about 1/2 way through
the second one. There was supposed to be a second film to finish it
but that was never made. AFAIK no one else has ever finished the job.

All three parts of the Lord of the Rings are out there. I have 'Return of
the King'. Oh yeah... And 'Wizards' is just grand....

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. John Ritter does the voice of the
hero. It's a good film.

I /KNOW/ you're talking about the film... duh.... [chuckles] I won't
vouch for the quality of the animation, or the exact duplication of the
original production staff... But trust me... 'Return of the King'
exists... Even though I can see grounds for wishing that it didn't.

The second half of the LotR was finished by Rankin-Bass, not Ralph
Bakshi. These are the same people that made the Hobbit cartoon and most
of the seasonal Christmas specials we get here in the U.S. It was a made
for TV movie and it was really pretty bad. Like the Hobbit, it was done
as a musical, which I think worked well for the Hobbit, but not for the
LotR. About the only thing I can concretely remember is the Orcs in
Mordor singing "When there's a Whip, there's a Way."

The worst thing of it all was the background music

[Insert corny ballad music] "The end of the ring...The return of the
king.....a new age has come to the land!....."
