I thought I sent this already, however, there isnt' anything in my sent box.
I blame microsoft and their blasted Swedish stealth ships...

ANyway, I'm looking for cyberpunk and/or shadowrun novel recommendations.
I'm widely read on the topic, but would appreciate suggestions on favourite
titles. Has anyone read Lucifer's Dragon?

Alternatively, I'ld be interested in reading any sci-fi or fantasy where our
hero is either a shaman or a physad type character.

Has anyone read Lucifer's Dragon yet?
Thanks,

CMF.

Windows has detected a Linux-based navy in your area. It will be
nuked, requiring you to restart your country. Would you like to send
a report to Microdaft? (Yes) (No, nuke me too)

I am rereading Stephonson's Snowcrash and it is an excellent
cyberpunk novel. I hand Gibson's Neuromancer to almost anyone who
comes to my SR game with no idea what cyberpunk is. Many of the SR
novels are good for flavor text, 2XS being one of my favorite. When
reading SR-specific novels, bear in mind that most of the authors
took extreme poetic license with the mechanics of the game. Steel
Rain has a decent adept character. Fade to Black does a good job of
demonstrating team dynamics. It (along with Who Hunts the Hunter)
depict shamans very well, along with the contrast between hermetic
and shamanic mages. Run Hard, Die Fast is another book with some
interesting team dynamics demonstrated. The team operates very well
professionally, even though they do not always gets along personally.

Sadly, cyberpunk is not as prolific a genre as, say, fantasy fiction.
Finding good books set in it is difficult. When Gravity Falls (not
sure of author) was a decent book with a very cyberpunk feel.

If you find any good ones, let everyone know. :)

Yup. And if you find anywhere we can buy said good ones online, let us
know too. I've been trying for ages to get ahold of the (supposedly)
excellent Hardwired, by Walter Jon Williams, and Amazon doesn't seem to
be aware of its existence. As for When Gravity Fails (by George Alec
Effinger), it's marked as unavailable. Damn.

Anyway, I'll second Kori's recommendations on Snow Crash and
Neuromancer. You should also check out Mirrorshades (Bruce Sterling et
al.) and Faerie (Paul J. McAuley).

Mine has to be Snow Crash; you can use a fair amount of it in SR, even, for
example if you want to have an idea of what it'd be like to put a
different security force on every neighborhood in Seattle.

Nah, that was Effinger. Read it and the 3-4 follow-up books.
Muslim adaption to the CP world. And a great read.

I'm looking for a good book in the cyberpunk/shadowrun genre. I've read
most of the SR novels and am widely read in the Cyberpunk genre as well.
Would anyone care to send me their favourite titles?

Alternatively, I would be interested in reading good fiction where the
protagonist is either a shaman, or a physad type hero.

Ta,

Xian

Yeah, I'm a great fan of Neail Stephenson and I've read all his books except
the most recently published. I have also read the Stephen Bury Pseudonym.

Of course, William Gibson is a must read, and I've read everything upto and
including Idoru, but nothing since. I'm tired of his writing, though, and
haven't even been tempted to read any of his most recent books. Although, I
could possibly, maybe, kind of get interested in picking up Pattern
Recognition. Has anyone read that either?

Are you guys talking about Effinger's book When Gravity Fails? Or a
different title? I haven't read it either, but like you annot get a copy of
it. It has already been recommended to me.

I'm a great fan of Richard Morgan. If you guys haven't read Altered Carbon,
then I suggest you drop everything and do so straight away. Also, I'm a
large fan of Michael Marshall Smith, who seems to tangent from genre to
genre, but is extremely original and refreshing.

I'm not a great fan of Bruce Sterling, however, and wouldn't likely read
anymore of his titles.

All good suggestions, though. Keep em up.

CMF.

Well, most of Gibson, a lot of Sterling, Stephenson is mostly cyberpunk,
sometimes with, sometimes without the tech. And Effinger, his City series
starting with When Gravity Fails.
Of course, read the SR novels, some of them are good, all of them are
germaine.

And what is Lucifer's Dragon?

I stand corrected -- I never did read any of their books, as my local
library's catalog didn't even know the authors :(

Quicksilver and The Confusion? Go and read them now :)

I managed to get through one book of his (Holy Fire) and the only reasons I
managed that were because I was on an aircraft for much of the time (and
so had nothing else to do) and because I felt that I'd paid for it, so I
might as well make sure I got my money's worth. If his other books are
anything like this one, I can't be bothered to read them.

I *highly* recommend Effinger's books. They are a lot of fun to read, and
full of ideas for SR GMs <egmg>.

Thank you all for the suggestions. It's a pity the list hasn't eveolved
much past Wordman's list from 5 years ago, containing really alot of the
staples of Cyberpunk literature. I will source a copy of When Gravity
Fails, and also have a look at the rest of Effinger's books to see what
they're like.

Wordman, if you're interested, I can suggest other titles for your likst if
you would like to update it. Perhaps there will be others who will be
interested in reading some new authors or styles.

In the meantime, if anyone remembers any titles they really enjoyed, or
didn't enjoy but thought mildly interesting, please send them through, I'll
read pretty well anything.

CMF.
