There are basically two broad categories, mace and flail.

A mace is just about any kind of medium long pole with a weighted head,
usually with spikes or ridges or other nasty things. A mace, regardless of
construction, can deliver tremendous crushing blows.

A flail is a weighted object, often with similar nasty spikes, attached to
a short to medium long pole by some form of chain. Flails deliver less
total force than a mace, but the flail has the nasty trick of being able to
get around an oppoent's shield and doing serious harm to his arms.
