When you get right down to it, essence really doesn't matter, because
a mage does not use his or her eyes to astrally perceive in the first
place. Replace a mage's eyes with cyberoptics, or remove them
entirely and he will still be able to cast spells. Why? Because
astral *perception* is another sense entirely. You do not need your
ears to see; simiarly you do not need your eyes to astrally perceive.

The books describe it as "sight" for the simple convenience of those
of us who do not have the sense.

Then why can't you cast spells that affect the physical wolrd from
astral space?

Because the aural synchronization between spell caster and target
cannot bridge the two worlds. An entity in the physical world may be
visible[*] in astral space, just as an entity in the astral world my
be visible in the physical world. But visibility in the other world
does not imply existance in it, and the aural synchronization between
caster and target cannot form a bridge between the two worlds; it only
forms a bridge between two entities that exist in the same world.

* By "visible" I use a broader but equally valid definition of "can be
perceived in some fashion". This could be by sight, hearing, smell,
or any other sense.

This might be a houserule (I don't use magic). But I think you
can, only you take physical damage instead of mental.

Because you need to bridge the "gap" between the two planes. By switching
on his "sixth sense" (i.e. astral perception), the magician can do that,
since his body forms the bridge. If he has no body (such as when astrally
projecting), he cannot form a bridge between the two planes.

'Cause the two worlds are seperate. The magically active can bridge the
two, allowing energies to flow from the Astral to the phyiscal, but ONLY
if they are physically there. The same rules go for free spirits... they
can cast spells that affect the physical world only if they are
manifesting.

That reminds me... in one of the modules ("Dark Angel"?), there's a blind
Yak mage, and she spends ALL her time Astrally perceiving. :)

In astral space, all spells cast cause Physical drain. You cannot
affect anything on the real plane unless it is a percieving magician,
dual nature critter, focus, or a spell lock.

You can, but you need a bridge for the energies.
When you're in physical form, you form the bridge by attuning your aura to
the victim.

In astral space, you still need a bridge, but as you're not present
physically, you need something else, like a spell lock for example.
