However, if a mage *attempts* to shed a geas, s/he does not gain a magic
point for that grade ... unless MITS changes things ...

EXCUSE ME?? I don't think so. That's not anywhere in the Grimoire that I
can find. Are you sure you're not thinking of a house rule?

You are correct; the magicians initiate grade is added to his magic rating
whether or not he attempted to gety rid of a geas. Also, if they fail on
their dice roll to get rid of a geas, there are NO ill effect. (Other than,
of course, not getting rid of a geas) See pg 38 in the Grimoire for more
info. Of course, as always this may change drastically when MitS comes out.

Hmm ... I don't THINK so but it's not in the books ... I guess it's time
for me to join the Mind Like a Rusted Shut Steel Trap Club... :)

Okay, now this time I have to wonder. Where did you get this from?
Seriously, I can't find it. I know that a special quest, which can be
performed but once per advancement of a grade (one per grade of advancement
can occur), one Geas can be shed. But, I have ALWAYS been under the
information that you also gained the point as well.

It sounds like a house rule to me. The Grimoire, p. 38, doesn't mention
that you don't gain a grade when you want to shed a geas, but that you can
try to get rid of a geas every time you go up in initiation grade. The two
are not exclusive in any way I can see.
