Ed, your topic of discussion isn't that disconcerting. so don't worry.
Techniaclly, Shamans ask the spirits for favors and the spirits do so. It's
one reson the limiting factor on the number summoned is Charisma instead of
Willpower for Shamans. Now, Huth told me (in meat) that while that's true, the
players all know that the Shaman will get what he want, and suggested a
Charismatest to get the Spirit to perform a service-but that's something I'll
touch on
later.

Hermetics bind elementals-they are definitely more coercive. So yes, in a way
they are enslaving them.

However, a final, quick note: Spirits can't come here without a mage's help.
They may be pressed into service but without the mage/shaman they can't do
anything on this plane. That is certainly a contributing factor to their
desire for freedom.
