Simply put, Otaku are a unique clique of childrenor young teens who
can "deck" just by plugging straight from thier jack into the wall-"look
ma, no cyberdeck". Except they are all orphans...
Thier BRAINS are attuned to the matrix- they are members of decker
Cliques that recruit orphaned children and teach them to start decking
on tortises as todlers, and hot decks as kids.
They first were mentioned in the Denver Box sets discusion of the
Denver Data haven, just as shadowtalk. VR2 gives optional rules for
playing them.
I don't think they are magical. They undergo what is called
"resonance" in the proces of becoming Otaku, its like an awakening in
the matrix. I think this is just thier brains learning to process
matrix data... Aided by some "outside" force, probably a sort of AI in
the matrix. Iamago also comes to mind, but I don't want any spoilers.
That clearly involved magic and technology.
They often refer to this in magical metaphors, speaking of spirits of
the matrix and calling themselves technomancers or cybershamans.
Hell, hook a kid up to a remote control deck though a jack, young
enough and long enough, and he might learn to RIG without a VCR! The
brain is a funny thing that way. I don't think its magic, at least not
of the astral juju sort.
