OK, I noticed something. Casting spells through your astral form
inflicts Physical Damage on your body, regardless of what spells are
being cast. However, I've also noticed that an astrally projection
form can last Essence = hours after a projecting mage's body is
killed. Does this mean that the astral form of a dead mage can cast
any spells it wants with impunity?

Unless they seriously changed things in SR3, you've misinterpretated things.

The way it worked in SR2, at least, was:

You cast spell.

You take drain.

The drain is damage, and all damage on the Astral is kept on track via the
Physical condition box. This damage is reflected in your physical body, but
it is actually happening to your Astral body.

So, with a dead mage, he would take damage. The only difference is that the
dead mage's body wouldn't reflect the damage, as the link is broken.

Exactly, but in the words of Sean Connery," What do you want me to do,
kill him again?" A dead body can't take any more damage, so now what?

Okay, my turn. ;)

It's like this. Basically, when you cast spells on the Astral you always
take Physical Damage for drain. If this is enough to kill your Astral
form, your body dies as well. You no longer exist on either plane as a
living being. If, however, your meat body is killed while you are astrally
projecting, your Astral form doesn't die immediately. You are allowed to
roam around for awhile in the Astral and do what you will.

Make sense?

Love that quote, what's it from?

Makes sense. I would say start keeping a seperate track of physical damage
done to the astral form after the body had been killed. If he uses up all
ten boxes and goes unconscious, he has lost the last of the cohesion that
his spirit was maintaining and his astral form disipates. This plays well
with the mage who suddenly appears and tries to knock everyone out in
astral space that he can in one final spell, literally burning himself out.

Nice try but, no. : )

The way I handle it is to "reset" the magician's Damage Tracks to zero at the
moment of his death. Effectively, the astral form becomes a ghost with a
preset lifespan (the magician's remaining essence) and no powers. Casting
spells in the astral causes physical damage as normal. If the astral form
manages to take deadly damage before its time runs out, it disrupts its
remaining structure, and it's gone.

Of course, in some cases, I just turn the astral form into a true ghost (from
MITS) and give it some additional powers. Nothing like geeking a mage's body,
only to find out that his astral form has become a vengeful specter with
Materialization, Paralyzing Howl, and spellcasting abilities. <EGMG>

Nice thought, Sommers, but I'd say make the number of boxes equal to the
remaining Essence the dying spirit has. I think this better matches the
thought that the longer its been since the meat died, the less cohesion the
spirit has and hte less he cn take before dissapating.

Ah HELL Steve, you're being nice now. If that had been an INITIATED mage

Strike me down and I will become more powerful, neh?

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
