magic
is an integral part of a creature's existence. In what way does a certain
genotype in humans provide access to magic? What is the nature of mystic
energies that they can only be called upon under certain conditions? Having
conversed with many mages, shamans, mystics, and spiritualists...I have
received almost as many answers as people I have discussed these issues. The
most appealing answer (to my mind) so far is that the biosphere is a sentient
organism, of sorts. It has been suggested that a complex enough system falls
into a patterning which dictates the functions of other patterning in the
larger system. The process of adaption, for example, is one such deterministic
system. Given input x, for example, an overall output y is achieved. Each
living organism becomes roughly analogous to a functioning cell of the larger
organism (meta-organism). Magic: one explanation is that, given a closed
system, a given change produces a slight change in the system, that change
in the system ripples down to other components in the system. Given limited
means of examination available, the entire causal tree often would not be
obvious. The Awakening, then, might potentially be the stirrings of this
larger meta-organism (which would be, perhaps, the root of belief in gods?)
to the invasion of a construct separate from the original integrated system
(technology as analogous to a cancer). The phenomenon of magic might,
then, be an epiphenomenon of the meta-constructs attempt to excise this cancer.
Given the adaptive abilities, albeit slow, of the biosphere it is not
inconceivable the the "tech construct" could be integrated into the largre
system or may, potentially, co-exist with the biosphere. In such a conceptual
framework, it is possible that eventually a self-directed "tech construct"
may begin to achieve effects deemed magical...but this is merely conjecture
on the part of a theoretical researcher of the Ars Magica. Input from more
applied-side oriented Practicioners would be imminently helpful in production
of my thesis....]<<<<<
