I'd say yes. It's not really possible to change the nature of something
using masking, just make it harder to 'see/detect' Like, If you're a
magician, when you mask your aura, you still scan as a human/whatever.
Even when you mask your aura, your basic appearance (alive, human) does
not change, so when you mask a focus, uh--it's hard to see, but it is
still a focus for the purposes of a detect spell. It's a way to
circumvent the process.

Okay, I get you, but isn't that a change from [never mind you just said
you don't have sr1] (I'll have to look this up)

My take:

What is meant by 'see' is see in astral space, i.e., the focus, astral
body, etc. If the guy is invisible, you should still be able to nail the
focus, as there is no such thing as 'astral invisibility' spells look
like spells, so a spell granting such invisibility would look like a
giant, easily distinguishable spell with a nice 'invisible' lable on it,
wrapped around a warm, gooey center with the 'human' sticker on it.
maybe I'm drifting off the point.

I'd agree with all this above, except in the case of an AREA spell,
which well, somewhere out there was dealt with in the rules. See SR2,
grounding, and look for the words 'area spell' That's where it gets
nasty. Otherwise I'd agree, the spell can only affect (effect?) the
person or magician holding the focus/ spell lock and the
focus/spell lock itself, which is destroyed if the [combat] spell
grounds.

I guess I'd also modify the bit about physical spell required, too,
because the spell was required to be physical based on attacking a focus,
which wouldn't be affected by mana spells. So any combat spell (optional
area affect) can ground if cast at a magician projecting in astral space.
