Kudos, the depth and breadth of info offered by Various listmembers
is amazing in regards to this campaign relevant topic...

Special thanks to Patrick Goodman, If interested in comparing notes by
private e-mail I would be overjoyed. You must have similar campaign reasons
to have done such extensive HMHVV groundwork...

Mostly was trying to have my Mini-Mega "Suskin" use exposure to HMHVV
strains to 'flag' possible Magus factor genome subsets...

Does this sound valid, using a magically active virus to attempt to unlock
this 'undiscoverable' mystery? Pro's & Con's people...

I understand that for game balance reasons this should always reside
just outside of researchers reach to prevent Magus-clone armies and similar
abuses...

Yeah, I'd forgotten how good this list could be...

I like this. I guess you've established some sort of differing
susceptability to HMHVV based on magical ability? In that case, if you're
prepared to lose enough mages to it, some sort of statistical DNA/HMHVV
susceptability test might work. Depends really on if you could work on cell
samples, because vampirising lots of mages is a bit of a waste, not to
mention dangerous if you fail to kill any of them... On the other hand, do
cell samples have auras? Can you infect them with HMHVV?

One problem with doing anything in this area is that I always got the
impression that the true nature of HMHVV was a little mystery FASA were
deliberatly leaving open for a future adventure (or maybe just to keep us
guys busy), so you might risk a future product messing with your storyline.
Having said that, it's an age-old storyline, so it's probably unlikely...

Game balance, shmalance. There are plenty of powers in the world (various
dragons and immortals, for a start) who can come in and stomp on Suskin's
research if necessary. Anyway, rules abuses by the GM are always fun. Just
as long as the player's can't get hold of the research...

<SNIP>

My thoughts are just like any other virus, the nessecary ingredients to
self-replicate, need to be present in the cells attacked (in this case they
must be magically viable). The majority of population are beings with
latent but recessive Magus potential(results in base form) or the 'rare'
active & dominant forms (Awakened HMHVV Casters).

Rate of susceptibility is likely to parrellel base racial stock.

(IMHO follow character creation priority table - magical priority
it would mean higher incidence of HMHVV in humans due to insignificance of
racial priorities).

Just as U.G.E. sometimes is dormant until adolescence (until individual
absorbs enough 'mana' to spontaneously goblinize into the new form. HMHVV
may merely transform the latent giving them paranatural abilities of their
base form or 'Jump-Start' the Magus Potential causing the Awakening of a
previously mundane along with the 'gift' of their more common
para-abilities.

I realize that this "streeetttccchhh" of existing foundations is not exactly
'clear' but I am leaping blindly into the mouth of madness in the attempt to
find a methodology that 'feels' right...

Thanks, Lilblue

It's amazing how much junk can accumulate in a brain...even on-topic junk.

De nada. Happy to help out.

Well, there's a problem with that, in that all my notes are currently on
post-its and miscellaneous scraps of paper, waiting to be collected and
typed up. Still, if you'd like to toss ideas back and forth, and you don't
want to take up mailing list real estate, the addy is remo@***.net; feel
free to drop a line.

Not really; just felt the need to clean up some inconsistencies I perceived,
and lay some groundwork for some stuff I plan on submitting later in the
year.
