This is a follow up from a previous request, I need to know if there are
any digized maps of the the Great SeaTac area. It need not be the same
map from ShadowRun, any map will do so long as it shows streets and
names, a sort of road map. If you have on please feel free to send it,
if you know where one lies on the internet, please send me the address.

Thanx

Another idea is to go down to AAA and get a Seattle Map from them (if that
is where you play). Non-members might get charged a couple of bucks, but
it might be worthwhile.

Same applies if you are in other cities as well (we use Chicago).

Personally I would prefer IFF format.

Prolly the best way to get a good map of somehting is to go to your local
university. I know here at the U of A we have a pretty good selection of
maps from around the world and the local deserts (gee, how suprising). I
would have to guess that most universities have at least _some_ kind of
map collection. Try it.

I don't know of any maps online. However I live in the seattle area and
can provide descriptions, probably more than you can get from a map of
interesting areas.

So find some places for me to check on and write about, I'll take a road
trip and report, <I really need to get out more! ;) >

I think the Seattle Sourcebook is still in print. It's first edition but it has a bunch
of maps, locations, etc. If you can get a hold of it, I'd recomend it.

There is no "edition" of the Seattle Sourcebook -- there are no game rules

I have it and I like it, but the maps in it are absolutely useless.
a) They don't fit together! :-(
b) Just some highways are identifyable, the rest is just grayish lines
with some (not readable) text segments thrown in.

So when it comes down to describing a area _not_ in downtown Seattle (the
area shown in the Blue/Black Book) it's absolutely useless! *sigh*
And since I like to hand out maps and the like to my players, I need
some more stuff...

I got a set (four maps) of current Seattle from the local chapter
of the American Automobile Association (AAA) through one of my regular
players. I also got a copy of the AAA travel guide for Washington and
Oregon and (as I stated earlier) a copy of the complete Yellow Pages
(comerial listings by service/business type). By cross referncing the
addresses I have identifided the local auto row, other busness districts
schools and the like.
I realize that it would be difficult for you to get this type of
material easly on your side of the pond so I toss out an Idea. Those of
us on this side of the pond who can get this type of material make direct
contact with GMs on your side and send the Material via Snail Mail. The
AAA material is free to members put there are limits to how many sets a
person can get. If each of us who can provide this aid to one other GM
the postage costs and all that bother is somewhat evenly distributed. I
will talk to my source and see if I can get another set.
If there is anyone on this list from the greater Seattle Area
they could colect year old phone books (in april) for those that could
use them.

Just a note, but look in your friendly neighborhood supermarket in the
magazine section and you can find cheap little magazines like 100 best
house plans for 95 or 80 homes for under....

My EX used to buy those all the time.. I saved one, and it comes in handy!

Hey, that's a cool idea! :) I'll have to look into this possibility... Oh,
something else I just thought of: I don't know how this is done in other
countries, but here in the Netherlands, if you look at advertisements for
new houses in newspapers, sometimes there's a plan of the house in the ad.
Could be a source for the layout of modern buildings...

My players all have a temporary disorder known as "lack of imagination". They
have requested that for almost every stage of the game I give them a printed
map of the building area etc. I was wondering if anyone else did this, and if
so, would they be interested in sharing maps. I will be posting a web page in
a few days that has some of my better maps for all who are interested.

Well, actually I do not have a page for stuff like this, but maybe
try Apartements.Com at

http://www.apartments.com

They have many a floorolan for apartements (as the name might
sugests) and with some work and a graphicprogram you'll get
some nice things out of it.

Let them draw those themselves, based on your directions ("You're in a
hallway about five meters long and two wide, with a door at the end and
one in the middle on the left.") However, be sure _you_ know what the
place is really supposed to look like, because if you go by your players'
map you might find the building doesn't fit together the way it should :)

I think it's a nice touch but not always neccessary. During a combat scene
or for trying to get into a building, I generally scetch something out, but
it's very rough. Occasionally I'll sit down and draw something out very
nice and it does make a good impression...or else I'll turn to my wonderful
Sprawl Sites book and draw out a map in there...
I need to be very accurate in my maps though...not for the players, but for
myself...and if i've never been to a certain kind of place, it's hard for
me to come up with somethign logical....like a night club...I have no idea
what I night club looks like, besides in a movie or show. So, I'd take a
look at that page.

Good luck. If I were you (which, I'm not) I'd tell them to grab
some paper and draw their own based on your descriptions.... as long as
you don't crack first (they'll start asking you for nitpicky details)
they'll get more imaginative.

I bought some CAD programs, all low end, and they can be a great help for
highly detailed maps but for just basic floorplans spreadsheets can do it
quickly and easily. I was playing a tactical ops type game by e-mail and the
GM showed me this little trick. I use the borders commands to make different
walls, doors and windows and use the sizing commands to make the line longer
or shorter. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it. I use it quite a bit
in e-mail games.

Sprawl Sites (a first edition sourcebook) has location archetypes, maps,
and quite a few contacts. Not really the best book, or the best maps, but

I've got a sourcebook for a game called "Millenium's End" (which looks like
a nice system, though I've never got around to playing it), which has a
whole heap of maps for various sites. And there's the added bonus that I'm
yet to have a player who has seen the game, and as such doesn't know the
maps backwards. :)

Along those same lines, I'm looking for any suggestions for a good
program that can make maps of floorplans for houses and offices, etc.
If anyone knows of a program that can also do street maps, that'd be
great, too.
As always, the cheaper the better.

Another listmember was talking about writing a SR mapmaking util as a
Pocket Secretary '98 module. Haven't spoken to him recently about it, but I
would like to mention that PS '98 1.5 is back into active development, and
looking pretty good, although buggy, as the people in Undernet #Shadowrun
will attest too, as they've heard me bitching about it for the past couple
days.

There are a number of generic books (published by Flying Buffalo) that
contain city maps, but it's mostly for fantasy games; I believe there is
also one for SF settings, though. City Books 1 through 7 the're called, I
believe, and there are also some map sets. I don't own any of these,
though, so I can't comment on quality, quantity, etc.

Other than that, one book with good maps of modern buildings is the GM
Companion for Millennium's End; however, the maps take up only about 1/4
or 1/3rd of the book, the rest being more or less ME-specific material
like computer system layouts and NPC stats, plus miscellaneous stuff like
name lists (to pick NPC names), tables of organization (for militaries,
corporations, criminal organizations, and more) and movies they suggest
you watch for playing ME.

Of course, there is also Sprawl Sites, and though the maps are pretty
basic, they do represent Shadowrun buildings.

There's a wonderful program for that, called City Simulator, that does
both floor plans and street maps, but unfortunately, the program has
only existed as hyped vaporware for at least a year. :(

(I have the url for the program somewhere around here, but since it's
not available for public consumption, does it matter?)

There is a Star Wars supplement called something like "Strongholds and
Hideouts", put out by West End Games. It has some good maps of various
places. Though I would look it over first if you can to make sure that it
will work for you.

What program did you use to design your maps?

Speaking of map-making utils, has anyone tried using Campaign Cartographer
for Shadowrun. I just got CC2 and have been wondering about creating the
neccesary objects to create Shadowrun maps.

Well, if you live in the US you can go down to the magazine rack in the
grocery store and you're likely to find at least one magazine dedicated
to house floor plans. I have no idea if those magazines are available
in other countries. Also, there are several web sites that have a
considerable number of house floor plans.

For office plans, try to find the websites of companies that
manufacture cubical walls and desks. They usually have graphics of the
various layouts available. Pick the ones you want and stick them into
an office space (note, unless a company spends big bucks renovating the
space they're leasing, the cubes are usually stuck in kind of
haphazardly). Add elevators, bathrooms, and coffee machine and you're
done :)

Hey Guys, been out of the list some time out but Now that Im back i want to
feed you with a lil discovery i broke into.

If you had visited BlackJack's place ( you can reach it from the dumpshock
nexus if you haven't )
You have experimented how thrilling is to the players when their map is a
Satellite Pic instead of the "Pencil-Drawn-keep-that-eraser-from-it" map.
But as wonderful as those are BlackJack offers ( the last time i visited
him ) 10 pics, which are for most of us not enough.
So i started searching the web for new feeds and found that those are very
difficult to get, until i stumbled into this one:
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com

Here you can get any feeds you might like and/or want ( even from your own
neighborhood if you're from the U.S. )
this might be a help or not, just wanted to help my fellow Storytellers
