This may be a thread off of the subject, but how many of you out
there are martial artists. I am interested in talking about the arts.
Does anyone know if there is a net dedicated to martial arts?

I have studied various martial arts for many a moon now. I too
would be interested in a martial arts-related net or news group. Maybe we
could call it "butt-kickers anonymous"

I'm far from dedicated, but have studied a a couple of forms :)I cannot
continue though because I tend to spar too hard, too often, and enjoy it too
much. I'm told I lack control :)

There's at least two of us, then. I've taken Tae Kwon Do for
roughly ten years. There is a rec.martial-arts forum, but it's been
largely taken over by people bragging about which m-a or artist is best.
There are some exceptions, however. I don't know of any lists dedicated
to m-a but I'd sure like to find one or more, if anyone out there knows of
such.

For karate try subscribing at listserv@*******.cc.ukans.edu
for aikido try "subscribe aikido-l <name>" at listerv@********.bitnet

Although warning:the aikido list is pretty hard to understand if you don't
actually do it. I myself unsubscribed to it pretty quickly. Not saying
aikido is bad, just that I don't understand it.

There's also a rec.martial arts newsgroup on usenet.

Would other martial artists contact me. i've got a piece of philosophy I
want fleshed out. Private mail please.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a martial artist, but I've been
studying Goju-Ryu and Shotokan Karate for a a few months now (off
and on).

Yes! Finally, another who is studying Ninjutsu! Is your school
part of the Bujinkan? How serious is it? Traditional or "new Wave" ninpo?

By the way...what the frag is iai do? Just curious

Iaijutsu is the martial art of drawing a sword really,
really fast and integrating the draw into the opening
(killing) blow. Iaido is probably the same thing.

The 'net is dedicated to transmission of data; however, I beleive
that some _parts_ of the 'net are dedicated to the martial arts. The
most likely place to start is the newsgroup 'rec.martial-arts', and I've
heard rumours of mailing lists for specific disciplines.

Got it. We do something like this in Ninjutsu as well. I didn't
know there was another whole art devoted to it. Cool.

I don't want to start a flame war but being something of an historian when
it comes to ninjustu, I just have to say that if you're learning it in a
school somewhere then it's probably not "real" ninjustu. I say that simply
because we historians cannot really agree what "real" ninja really were.

But yes, iaido/iaijutsu is a dedicated art that parallels kendo/kenjutsu
very closely.

Come on Rat, spit it out, I know what you really want to ask

Koga or Iga clan? By writting about it over E-Mail I can
already guess.

Either way Marc, its pretty cool and
I look foreward to speaking to you
more about Ninpo.

Heh, cute.

No, my opinion is that the "real" ninja are the professoinal spies first
described by Sun Tzu, and later mercenary ronin. Contrary to popular
belief, the samurai who followed Bushido was a rarity, and what was a
masterless soldier to do but sell his blade to those who would pay.

No, don't start a flame war. Yes, I take "real" Ninjutsu. It's
not all about mystical powers, amazing feats of contortionism, etc. It's
about hurting people alot in a very small amount of time. It's about
cheating in combat ( but you ask, "Combat has no rules, how can you
cheat?" to which I reply, "just come to my class and see."). It deals
with the nine ryu of traditional ninjutsu, only four of whuch are
actually "ninja" styles (gotta love Togakure Ryu!). My art has been
passed down for over 900 years, and even if historians don't agree on
*what* ninja were, the art of what they *did* is still very old.
But yes, I will agree. Quite a bit of nijutsu has been so
popularized that it bears little or no resemblance to ninpo. I can
almost see Hatsumi-sensei's frown of contempt at the modern "Learn to be
a Ninja!" ninjutsu schools.

Hey! "Ninja Town" (Iga-Ueno, in the Mie prefecture) is one of the biggest
tourist traps... ah, theme parks! that's it! in Japan :).

BTW, is that Hatsumi Masaaki-sensei you speak of? Just wondering, because
he is probably the foremost historian of Ninja today.

Another BTW, one of the better historical texts on Ninja, in English, is
_NINJA: The True Story of Japan's Secret Warrior Cult_, by Stephen
Turnbull. Don't let the pretentious title turn you away--there's a lot of
neat and useful information in this book.

Yep, the same. In addition to beinga veritable repository of
Ninpo history, he is also the Grand Master of the Bujinkan, of which my
school is a part.
