Subject: Martial Arts Question

What Martial Arts style would be most appropriate for a char born and
raised in Aztlan? My first thought was Capoeira but that's Brasillian
(Though, would an Aztlaner character be likely to know Capoeira? Either
way, I would like some help from some of the listmembers experienced with
Capoeira in designing the Capoeira style using the Martial Atrs design
system in TSS-02.) ... perhaps just street fighting? The char in
question was raised in a low lifestyle but also served in the military.

Thanks in advance.

(Btw, Adam, is TSS-09 still going to have some example Martial Arts
styles in it?)

You could take boxing. It is not as glamorous as Capoeira or some other
martial art, but it is taught all over the place. Boxers develop great
upper body strength and stamina. As for military training most are
combination of many styles, mostly hard fast take out moves. The Azzies
probably made something up with an Aztec favor. So you and the GM could
make something up and call it "Art of the Scared Fist" (in Aztec of
course)or somthing. I personally think boxing is your best bet.

Or perhaps wrestling? (This may be biased based upon viewing 'professional'
wrestling).

I would agree. Mexico is renowned for its boxers. If your not a big fan you
won't know many of them since there has been only one Mexican born heavyweight
that ever made a name for himself. We tend to focus on the heavyweights here.
Legendary boxing referee Arthur Mercante, who refereed the first Ali-Frazier
fight was asked who was the physically toughest fighter he had ever seen in
his 50 years in the ring and after a pause he said any Mexican fighter. As a
GM I would give a PC from Mexico with a boxing martial art, the toughness or
high pain tolerance edges as part of the package.

I would suggest boxing, or taekwondo. The Mexican Taekwondo team is *very*
good (better than U.S.), and they tend to turn out great lightweight
boxers.

Yup. Think of all the Mexican/Hispanic lightweights, flyweights, and so
on. And also think about Cuba, all the medal-winning Olympic boxers that
nation has produced. Cuba seems to produce some of the best amatuer boxers
in the world. Mexico seems to produce lots of professional boxers; it's my
understanding that there is a whole Mexican boxing circuit down there that
doesn't get any attention paid to it from up north.

I think (and this is only a guess) that boxing is an activity that the
young and disenfranchised take up to try and get out of the barrio. Here
in the US, the blacks in the ghettoes often seem to look at basketball and
football (athletics in general, but those two more so) as a way out of
poverty. I strongly suspect that boxing is the same way for many Mexicans
males.

And yeah, these fighters sometimes seem to be fighting for their very lives
in the ring (and sometimes they may be), so Edges such as Will To Live or
Pain Resistance would be very appropriate. Flaws like Uneducated or
Illiterate would also be appropriate, almost mandatory even.

As the recent martial arts thread brought up, boxing is a very effective
martial art. It's not flashy, it's not pretty like most Asian martial
arts, but it's pretty darn effective.

Anyone ... Asian martial arts are spread all across the world. It
would perhaps be inline not to choose a flashy one and go with Boxing
or Wrestling instead or even fencing (it is concidered to be a
Martial Art from time to time).

But then Judo is the most spread martial art in the world and there
ain't a whole lot pointing to that that is going to change anytime
soon. Karate is well spread to.

Then there are the more not so mainstream once. There are hoards of
them so if you wanna stand out in the crowd pick one of those.

What is wrong with just plain old street fighting and brawling ?

/Stefan

I don't ever recall saying that it would..

When I get around to compiling all the issues into a single book (After #10
folks, this is the final plan.), I'll make sure to add some sample styles
into it.

Contributions for TSS-09 are still being taken BTW, as I hope to have it
out very shortly after TSS Productions arrives back online..

Cool. I'm looking forward to it. I don't think I've once been let down
by TSS, good work. :)
