OK So you agree that matrix movement from node to node should be
instantanous. But how do ya handle running away from IC then ,who is
faster, simply the one with the higher initiative. Sure that would make
sense, but how much faster would you be. How much distance can you gain
within, let's say one combat phase ? There has to be some kind of ruling
on matrix speed.

Try this...

First initiative- The decker wins being chased by the biggest
son of a bitch black IC he's ever seen...

He races his scrawny butt to the closest node he can find, he rolls to
try to pass... He makes his roll and runs like a bat out of hell...

The Ice comes to it a couple of segs later. It makes it by, no problem
cince it has the proper coding...

Second initiative- Decker wins by a hair. And makes his roll *whew*,
through another node.

Black IC get held up by security programs.

Third Initiative- If the decker wins init again...and makes it through the
node he's at, he's home free...

If the BLACK IC wins init and makes it through the node, then the chase
continues...

If the deckboy *fails* to get through a node or lose init when the Black
IC is in the same dataspace with him, he goes toe to toe with the SOB
Black IC. *good luck*

My two cents.

I couldn't see it occurring.

What is wrong with just jacking out? It solves all your problems of running
away.

The problem is that if you jack out while running from or fighting a
Black IC, is that the IC gets a free shot at you from behind. And if you
remember right, Black IC do actual physical damage, not to your
personna program. Our decker has come within one little box of death
before he beat the Black IC. Let me tell you, he was groggy!!!

I thought it was only when you were in combat with them. I take it the
running bit comes out of VR? I do not have this sourcebook.

What do you mean? Not being held up, or even leaving?

Okay...A subprogram of the Black IC, or, if I was running...Heh.. a copy
of the Black IC slotted for the decker's signature.

Solution.

That's fine if you don't have anything better to do in the matrix
elsewhere, I guess. But, I'd leave the decker's signature where he
decked out... Let's the corps trace the address to the owner... Then you
got *real* problems... Toting *real* panther cannons.

While you are trying to jack out, the IC can catch up to you and take
his free shot. While jacking out only takes a thought, so does the IC
catching up to you and swinging. If you are in combat and try to jack
out, and the IC hits you, you lose the chance. It's a sad cycle.

In essence, the Black IC gets the free shot when you jackout. The IC
gets its chance to stop you, that is how Blackies are programed. If
the IC hits, tough luck. Take your damage and stay in the matrix. If it
does not hit, your home free. The bad thing is, if the IC actually hits,
YOU DO NOT GET TO RESIST!!!!!!!!!!!! The IC hits with 4 successes,
that is 4 physical blocks, no ifs ands or buts.

Not being held up, after all, it is part of the system.

That's a bit evil, it is difficult enough to trace a decker while he is in
the matrix, let alone after he's jacked out. He'd wanna have stuffed up bad
and left a real big signature, or he'd wanna have done something to really
cheese off the corp.

Yeah, but that's only if you're in combat with it. If all you're doing is
heading into a node then doing an about turn and leaving before combat
starts, then I don't see why the ICE should get a free hack at you. If you
run half way through the combat on the other hand...

She did not clarify. She was refering to jacking out only.
