I've always played Wylde Chylde as a being a strict vegetarian, as in he's
incapable of digesting meat. Part of it was my interpretation, and the
rest was the irony of being a leather-clad badass who has to go get his
stomach pumped if he accidentally eats the wrong kind of pasta sauce. I
never took it as a an allergy or anything, but it has a definite effect on
his life.

Since Duncan used one of my characters for a lot of examples, I'll use his
character as one. Wylde is vegetarian with a vengeance. Not only does he
get no real food value from meat, but it makes him violently ill. I like
this. It keeps people from playing "pointy eared humans" as I like to
call them (admittedly, elves are going to be most humanlike of the races,
being about the same size and not having much shorter lifespans... until
they all establish themselves separately, they'll likely remain so).

Before the character rearrangements that came with converting to SR3 (Two
characters actually changed gender! :), I had an elven druid (should
druid be capitalzed?) who was vegetarian. In SR3, I think I'm going to
change the char from a female elf to a male dwarf and I don't know if
I'll keep the vegetarianism (There are some ... ODD benefits of being a
male vegetarian...). The way I generally run it is that elves, in
general, are vegetarians but there are still a few omnivores in the
group.

Additionally, I had a player who wanted a vegetarian char... I can't
remember whether the char was an elf or not ... anyway, it was way beyond
run-of-the-mill vegetarianism so I let her take a moderate allergy to
ingested meat.

Mongoose is a technical vegetarian; that is, he won't eat anything
not technologically produced in some vat! With the new knowledge
points, some of the skills he has is "Nutrition/supplements" and
"survival/urban". Growing up in the Chicago Noose, he thinks its dumb
to eat ANY plant or animal- you don't know where it came from. I
describe Mongooses larder as being filled with Boost, Gainers fuel,
Mycomuscle, and other totally synthetic crap for body builders. And I
pay 1.2 times lifestyle cost (he has a suprathyroid).
And yes, it is amusing when he goes to a fancy restaurant, and the
only thing he can eat is Tofu, and they tell him its fresh...

Read Roweena's bit on being an elf again ... It implies that elves are
still vegetarians.

Not this elf.

I would suggest (without having a copy of BABY) that the average elf
should be a vegetarian - but there a certain elves who like and can live
on meat. And if you want to be one, then be one.

I've never seen anything written anywhere that says, "All elves must be
vegetarians". Although, I must admit, I don't have all the SR
sourcebooks. Just most of them.

I don't think elves ever really *were* vegetarians. What I think is that
the writeups in first and second edition reflected "researcher bias." Later
material did not support the concept.

It's a stereotype, never was a rule.

Me too. I say that all races are omnivores, which doesn't mean that
individuals cannot be vegetarian or carnivore... :) .

One of my favorite NPCs (I got quita a collection :) ) is a female
elf
who is 1.65m tall :) .

I'm pretty sure that would be a vegan. Knew a few of them back in college;
they hadn't had meat or animal products for so long, their body had adapted
to their vegan diet. If they changed their mind and tried to eat meat,
they got very ill and their body often rejected the meat, at least
inititially.

I suspect that it *could* be possible for the elven digestive tract to be a
bit more sensitive to meat than other races. It simply might be better
able to digest "rabbit food." Meat might clog the system easier. <shrug>
Dunno, it's possible. Or it could simply be a stereotype.

I've always ruled in my games that elves were vegetarian; not alergic to
meat, but more like an intolerance. An elf would get indigestion (which an
antacid or enzyme pill could cure, Carn-o anyone?) and possibly the runs
from a meaty meal. Most elves would probably be unused to the taste of
meat and find it gross, but some might just love it, despite the number it
pulls on their insides (think lactose intollerance and an ice cream
junkie).
