a VT engine opperate underwater ... couldn't a snorkel help a VT turbine
powerup while waterjets propel/float the vehicle? It would need to break
the surface before opening up the exaust nozels. First waterjets propel
it to just below the surface. A snorkel breaks the surface and lets the
VT engine warm up. Then the bugger breaks the surface (propeled by
waterjets). The exaust nozels are plugged in addition to some sort panel
over them. Now the panel is removed. The VT engine powers up with
pressure building until the plugs pop out (They'd also have some sort of
manual override). Now the LAV is above the surface of the water like a
hovercraft and its engine starts powering up for true VT and the LAV is
ready to intiate takeoff.
IMO, a submersible LAV would be better for retrieval by a sub rather than
launching from one ...
