AKA the Sidewinder variants (all AIM-9 series). Supposed to have been
replaced by the ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range etc).

The replacements for the AIM-7 Sparrow series. You wouldn't use an ASRAAM
to replace a Sidewinder; they're just too big and expensive for the job.

Ummm... can we get off of rec.aviation.military and back to ShadowRN? :)

If Marc was asking about technical designations, the answer
therefore is "they aren't". The Sparrow, the AMRAAM, and the
Sidewinder are all designated AIM-something. AMRAAM is just
a project name, as far as I know.
