Should you be able to substitute components from another set of combined
armor (Armor "packages" denoted with a (c)) if the item is not being
layered with an equivelant item?

Ie, (off the top of my head) wearing a cross button shirt from the
Armanté Dallas Line for Men with Long Coat from the Vashon Island
Actioneer line, the vest from the Vashon Island Sleeping Tiger line, and
the skirt/slacks from the Zoé Futura Line for an armor rating of 4/4. (Is
there a TN to social tests for wearing a combination this bizarre?)

*lol*

As a GM, I'd give you a weird look if you asked this
and tell you that you'd be getting similar looks from
everyone who isn't COMPLETELY lacking in fashion sense
(like my dad :) ) and ask if you really want that. If
you do, yes, you'd suffer lots of social penalties due
to lack of taste (from anyone with any taste) as well
as penalties for dressing down in good areas and
dressing up in bad areas.

Also, anyone who knows anything about the armoured
clothing (can we say "Star"?) would realise you're
wearing a weird combination to get lots of protection
and would figure that means you're up to something
shifty (why would anyone look like such a fool if they
didn't need to?) and hassle you in some way (if that's
in their job description).

Sounds a little harsh, maybe, but pulling a stunt like
that is indicative of a munchkinous mentality (at
least, if the point is to get the best protection by
taking the heaviest armoured pieces you can), even if
it wouldn't have a big game effect, and needs to be
squished out.

Of course, there are exceptions. If you tried to pull
this, Al, you'd just get the strange looks. :)

Actually, the example I posted was simply to use bits from the largest
number of combination armor sets. The combo I was thinking of using is
The Actioneer Line's Long Coat with Zoé's Skirt and some shirt (maybe the
Actioneer's High-collar shirt). I don't really care about having the
shirt increase the armor rating, I just don't want to be without armor
where a large number of vital organs are ...

If I go with the High-collar Shirt, the total armor armor is 4/3,
slightly better than a lined coat. However, it's a lot more expensive
(3,300¥ vrs 700¥)

Actually, you want munchy, add full-body form-fitting armor to the combo
in the original post. The total armor jumps to 6/4 and the form-fitting
armor doesn't count towards combat pool reduction. (I don't know about
quickness penalties, though ...) Of course, on top of that, you can add
titanium bone lacing and orthoskin 3 ... armor 8/5. (It can get even
worse with armored cyberlimbs ...)

Assuming mix-and-matching is valid, the munchiest combos are:
The Actioneer's Long Coat & Shirt with Sleeping Tiger's Vest and Zoé's
Skirt; total armor is 5/4.
The Actioneer's Long Coat with Sleeping Tiger's Shirt & Vest and Zoé's
Skirt; total armor is 4/5.

However, as for my motivations, I just liked the thought of an ankle
length skirt with a long coat.

This is different how? ;)

Basically, it all depends on the description. If the
descriptions of the outfits seem to work together,
then it'd be allowable, unless, like I said, it seemed
you were just doing it to get the maximum amount of
armour that you could.

Well, people wouldn't hassle you (except for the
Star's Fashion Police). :)
