Has anyone ever fiddled with mixing ammo types in a magazine (ie:
conventional AP or APDS, explosive or EX explo, and tracers)?
I do this IRL, and most folks do, but I have yet to figure out a good way
of handling it with SR's burst and full-auto rules.

The best way I've figured out to do this is to multiply the modifiers to
the Damage Code by the percentage of a given round in the burst. For
example, if you fire a 4-round burst from an assault rifle (8M) with two
rounds EX Explosive (+2 Power), one round Gel, and one round APDS, you'd
end up with a Damage Code of 9M:

mod. perc. result
EX: +2 Power x50% = +1 Power Level
Gel: Stun x25% = no Stun
APDS: x0.5 armor x25% = x0.875 armor

The trouble is that this takes a long time to figure out if many different
types of ammo are involved, so you may simply want to use the Damage Code
of the most prevalent round in the burst -- in the above example, that
would be the +2 Power from the EX explosive rounds.

In single-shot and semi-auto weapons, this isn't really a problem, though.

I suppose it would be really anal of me
to direct you to p.116 of SR3 where it
says that you can't mix loads in a clip.
Thankfully I'm not anal so I won't do that.

:)

I geuss its easier the more structured the clip is.
Alternating tracer/APDS loads would be pretty easy to work with for
example.
Another option is to load "packets" of three rounds for use with BF
weapons.

Example EX Explosive/APDS/Regular would become IMHO +1 Power -1
Ballsitic Armour.

Just a thought

Thankfully you're not, no :)

This rule obviously exists to avoid rules complications, as it should be
apparent to anyone with a Firearms skill of 0 or higher (yeah, I played
SR1 and SRII, sue me :) that you can mix ammo types in a gun IRL. It might
not work 100% well, possibly causing feed problems etc., but it _can_ be
done regardless of what the rules say.

Yes, but that's not the same as mixing ammo the way IronRaven asked about.
What you mean is alternating ammo in such a way as to fit in well with the
game mechanics. I'll grant you that that is probably the best way of doing
it, though, as it won't cause all kinds of complications. The down side is
that you are effectively stuck firing X-round bursts all the time.

I would ignore that ruling except for the for the question of game
mechanics, mainly becuase I type this about ten feet from a locker that
contains a number of a magazines that are mixed, even if all it is is a
tracer as the next-to-last round. (So long as you are shooting semi, you
see the tracer, drop you stick, get a new one in fast, and you've still got
a live round in your chamber.)
