I suspect my following problem is because I don't understand the
sentence:
Then add ECCM to counter all the spoofing techniques on the birds.
(Electronic xxx Counter Measures? Spoofing?)

But it sounds like the runners should be ripping off the 5 mill worth
of equipment and just selling that for a quick profit!

Electronic Counter-Counter-Measures. Spoofing = ECM.

If they can get it out, in one piece, in a couple of minutes.

I don't make it impossible to do this kind of stuff, but you don't play
around with electronics on aeroplanes in a few minutes, especially if you
want to fly the thing afterwards. And, in the original scenario that
started all this off, a few minutes was all the players had available to
them.

What I meant was that if one wanted to spot satellites, one
should probably purchase sensors with which to spot them. Then, because
the satellites ("birds") will have ECM to prevent exactly this (ie
"spoofing"), one would need a decent amount of ECCM to allow the sensors
to function through the ECM blanket.
Sorry for my lack of clarity.

I think that's what most people would do in lieu of trying to use
the gear, yes.

Most satellites can be found by taking photos of the sky, using image
comparison software to point out the differences, and extrapolating the
orbit.

Of course, this would probably be out of most runner's leagues (though a
simple astronomy program could probably do it for them)>

It's a time factor... can you do it in a few minutes?

For today's satellites with high albedo, yes I agree. If,
however, you have a grapefruit sized non-reflective satellite, it becomes
a bit harder, especially as that size is hitting resolution limits
through atmosphere.

It might be hard for them to do it within a few months, short of
making a run on a spy facility.
