spells using optical magnification devices (binoculars, telescopes, etc). I
don't subscribe to mages with cybereyes (but none of the PCs in our game would
do that anyway. they're too concerned with maintaining high essence and playing
"pure" mages and shamans).
The issue is whether mages can cast sight spells if they see someone on
the trid screen, or over some other electronic magnification device. After
discussing this with Fraternay and Kenda, we've come up with the following
paradigm which I think we'll use in our runs from now on.
1. If the person knows the mage is watching via electronic
magnification, i.e., the person calls the mage on vidphone and asks for a
healing spell to be cast. That person is knowingly exposing himself to the
mage, and there is no modifier to the mage casting a spell. Any spell.
2. If the person knows someone is watching him. This could apply to
video reporters, talk show hosts, televangelists, and the like. They are
exposing themselves to everyone, but not the mage in particular, so we'll add a
+3 modifier to the mage's target number.
3. If the person has no idea s/he is being watched. This would include
people on closed circuit TV, security cameras, being photographed by the mage's
rigger-friend's drone, etc. These folks are not knowingly exposing themselves
to anyone, and we'll add a +6 modifier to the mage's target number.
Modify the modifiers if you think circumstances so require. I know this
type system isn't perfect, and the purists among us may argue forever about how
many hertasi can dance on the heartstone, but from a practical standpoint of a
GM who wants to keep his game flowing smoothly, I think these will work.
