Subject: More Sourcebook Questions

Since you were all so helpful with my UB questions, I figured I would ask
you about the rest of the stash I got yesterday. ;)

Paranormal Animals of North America (Product #7105):

Was this ever updated for 2nd edition? Any conversion tips (other
than what's in the main book)? How useful do you find this book? Do you
use it in urban campaigns?

Sprawl Sites (Product #7103):

Was this every updated for 2nd edition? Any conversion tips (other
than what's in the main book)? How useful is this book?

SR 2nd edition BBB Hardcover (Product #7900):

Is this the one with all the typos in it? :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
I also got these books, but haven't checked to see if they are 1st or 2nd
edition yet:

Shadowtech (#7110) - cover looks identical
Rigger Black Book (#7108) - NOT the new RBB that just came out
Neo Anarchists' Guide to Real Life (#7208) - cover looks identical
Seattle Sourcebook (#7201) - cover looks identical
Street Samurai Catalog (#7104) - cover is similar, but different coloration
Virtual Realities (#7107) - golden angel in matrix on cover (VR 1.0?)
Shadowbeat (#7109) - cover looks identical
The Grimoire (#7106) - now, I know this one is 1st edition, 'cause I
recognize it from when I used to play 1st edition

Any ideas as to if some of these are the same as the ones I already own (I
already own copies of Shadowtech, NAGRL, Seattle Sourcebook, Shadowbeat
with identical covers), or if they kept the same covers but updated them
for 2nd ed?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------

Thanks again for all your help! I am so glad to get all these books (and
for free, even)!

Also, for the books in the sectioned off area, I would be happy to send
them to anyone who could use them. I either already have them, or have
updated copies of them, etc. Just cover the postage and they are yours.

Thanks,

Justin :)

Try looking for Paranormal Aminals of Europe, which updated a lot of the
powers. For the most part, Critter stats stayed nearly identical, with
the very *major* exceptions of hardened armor, Initiative, and anything
involving a Drain/Damage code.

Sprawl Sites is virtually a "generic" book; the encounters in it don't
rely on stats for opponents (well, they do: they just refer you to the
archtypes and contacts of the BBB.) The Archetypes and Contacts listed
within it have all been updated for SR2, with a few changes; anyone that
doesn't appear in SR2 should appear in the GM's screen. Watch out for
the Mage Detective!

Yup. :)

All "crossover" books - they listed both damage codes, dice pools, and
so forth.

> Seattle Sourcebook (#7201) - cover looks identical

No game mechanics to be concerned about.

> Street Samurai Catalog (#7104) - cover is similar, but different coloration

Reprint for second edition. A waste of fifty-six good pages of paper,
if you ask me.

> Virtual Realities (#7107) - golden angel in matrix on cover (VR 1.0?)

Superceded by VR2.0; the short fiction (which takes up the entire second
half of hte book) is *well* worth it.

With the exception of the SSC (which, as you mentioned, had a color
change), no SR1 book was reprinted to SR2.

Actually, I recently lost my copy of the Rigger's Black Book....

Nope, it was never reprinted nor updated, unfortunately...

And yes, I find it VERY useful. Lots of fun for throwing something a bit
different at the party.

Also, Paranormals of Europe falls into the same category...:]

SPrawl Sites is one of those "If you find it, it's not a bad buy, but not
necessary" books.

It also, as far as I know, wasn;t updated. It was a good 1st edition book
in that it had a bunch more archetypes and contacts listed in it (All of
which are now either in the main rulebook or the Contacts book that comes
with the GM's screen), and it also goes into Sprawl Law (Just what do those
pesky Zone ratings mean?) and stuff, but the best part of it that it has a
LOT of random encounter ideas for short one shot adventures.

Yup... This was the original printing of SR2, and unfortunately has all
the errors that comes with a first printing. Also, the binding is sorta
lousy, so after a few years the books starts to fall apart unless you are
very careful with it or don;t use it all that much. BUt it's still a
beautiful thing to own...:]

Great book, and was updated to 2nd edition.

It was a nice book in it's time, but only for the cool vehicles. It sucks
now...:]

But, as it's an OOP (Out Of Print) SR Book, hey, it doesn;t hurt to own
one...:]

This was also updated (I think), VERY useful book for info on day to day
stuff like Credsticks.

An Update is in the works, but if you are running a Seattle Campign, it's
great for flavr, and to show just where Redmond is compared to Downtown,
and that sort of thing...:]

This was updated and is still in print, and is useful, though all the
weapon stats and stuff are in the gear charts in the back of Fields of
Fire. Others disagree with me, but I feel it should be the second "weapon"
book bought, after FoF.

>Virtual Realities (#7107) - golden angel in matrix on cover (VR 1.0?)

The decking rules sucked, but the Renny Story rocked, and I love the flavor
of VR1 decking vs. VR2. But VR2 has better rules, though I can;t stand the
layout of the book...

GREAT BOOK! Rockers, Reporters, and Sports Figures, oh my! <grin>

The Grimoire (#7106) - now, I know this one is 1st edition, 'cause I

Cool book, but everything in it is in the 2nd ed. book. Not something I'd
recommenmd picking up unless you want to own the first ed. book. I like
the cover better than on Grimmy 2 though...

Other than Grimmy 2, VR2, and of course Rigger 2, all the covers are the
same. If all they did was convert the stats to 2nd edition (Like they did
iwth SSC and ST), then they kept the same cover (The exception to this is
SR2, though the cover color changed, if not the piccy). If the rules
changed as ell as the stats, they chnged covers...;]

That's tempting...:] But I already own them all...;]

To the best of my knowledge, no. However, the sourcebook conversions in
the back of SRII gives all the details you need. If you have a bit of
spare time, I suggest taking both books to hand and penciling in the
changes.

> Any conversion tips (other than what's in the main book)?

None that I can think of, except using the power descriptions from PAoE,
or from SRII if PAoE isn't available.

> How useful do you find this book? Do you use it in urban campaigns?

I hardly ever use any paranormal animal, and when I do it's usually in the
country somewhere. I have found a handy way of rolling up a random
encounter with a critter, though: take PAoNA to hand and roll a D100; roll
again and add together on 96-00 and look up the page number you just
rolled.

> Sprawl Sites (Product #7103):
>
> Was this every updated for 2nd edition?

Again, not that I know of. Although FASA's price lists refer(ed) to it as
Sprawl Sites One, I've never seen a Two...

> Any conversion tips (other than what's in the main book)?

I didn't know SRII had conversions for Sprawl Sites? At any rate, there's
nothing there to change, really, apart from page references to archetypes
and contacts in the SR main rules.

> How useful is this book?

There are four parts to the book, and some are much more useful than
others. The following are my opinions, of course:

Location Archetypes: useful, but I suspect this is partly because European
and American architecture differ somewhat, and I'm only used to the
former.

Encounters: not useful at all. Last Friday I tried improvising an
adventure based on a random encounter roll, but after five or six attempts
I still didn't have anything I could use. The problem is that the
encounters are too specific -- they assume the players are in a certain
situation when you roll up that encounter, which IMnsHO just doesn't
happen. At least, _I_'ve never rolled up such an encounter...

Archetypes & Contacts: useful because it expands the choices available to
players, as well as the number of quick NPCs the GM has at his or her
disposal.

Laws & Credsticks: again useful, but Shadowtech has all of this as well
and in more detail.

Yep. The errata for it is moe than twice as long as for the softcover, and
still manages to miss some errors :)

No idea. You can find out by looking at the damage codes, I believe, but
since I've only ever seen the first edition I'm not sure.

> Rigger Black Book (#7108) - NOT the new RBB that just came out

AFAIK no second edition of this was ever released.

> Neo Anarchists' Guide to Real Life (#7208) - cover looks identical

This has game stats and page references for both editions, so no worries
there.

> Seattle Sourcebook (#7201) - cover looks identical

AFAIK this has no game stats or page references to SR, so there's no need
for a second edition.

> Street Samurai Catalog (#7104) - cover is similar, but different coloration

If the cover's light gray, it's first edition; otherwise it's second.

> Virtual Realities (#7107) - golden angel in matrix on cover (VR 1.0?)

That's VR 1.0, definitely. The angel is from the short story in the back
of the book.

> Shadowbeat (#7109) - cover looks identical

I don't think there's a second ed of this one either. You can easily find
out by looking at the character creation thing, which refers to priority
numbers (1,2,3,4,5) rather than letters (A,B,C,D,E).

> The Grimoire (#7106) - now, I know this one is 1st edition, 'cause I
> recognize it from when I used to play 1st edition

If it has "14th edition, 2050" on it it's for first edition SR.

See above; I don't think [m]any sourcebooks were ever updated for SRII
except for the SSC, and for that they changed the cover.

Lucky bastard ;)

I'd take you up on that offer, except I've already got all of them...
