This time, though, not about Seattle. Last session, my players got to make
a crash landing/parachute jump in the plains of the Algonkian-Manitou
Council, about an hour's flight or so east of Calgary. I think I have a
decent idea of what the terrain there is like (in short: I assume it's
much the same as the other parts of Alberta I've seen) but can anyone
supply me with some ideas for the kind of weather the PCs would suffer
from in October?

Hah. Another from 30C to -30C. It could still be summer, it could be
the dead of winter. ;-)

On average-ish, probably about -5-5C at night, up to 15C during the
day. Precipitation could be anything from nothing to six inches of
snow, and rain is relatively common around that time of year.

I am originally from Alberta, so I can answer this question for you.
They are probably landing somewhere near the present day
Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Maybe someplace like Vulcan, Alberta. In
mid-October the weather starts to turn from a pleasant fall to a
miserable winter. There would be cold arctic air moving south with
possible precipitation in the form of snow. There most likely would not
be any snow-storms but there would definitley be some flurries (i.e.
light snow). There would be frost on the ground by early October and
maybe even a little bit of snow by the end of October. I remember
Halloween as a kid haveing to wear my costume over a parka and
snow-pants ;).

However, every few weeks Alberta experiences a chinook. This is a warm
dry air mass that is jetisoned over the rockies. In Alberta it is quite
common for the temperature to be below freezing (0 C) one day and later
that day to go 5-10 C above freezing. Snow usually does not last very
long in Alberta, due to evaporation from the chinooks. This is why
Alberta is considered to be a semi-arid region. Irrigation is necessary
for most agriculture.

Err, that would be closer to the Alberta-BC border. . . but of
course, there's something funny about dropping a team of runners into
Vulcan. Or Heads Smashed In Buffalo Jump. :-)

BTW, please place your replies underneath the quoted text - thanks!

Best,

Actually Vulcan is in central Southern Alberta. An hour north of
Medicine Hat would be a better location for what Gurth would be looking
for. But I could not miss the oppurtunity for suggesting Vulcan,
Alberta as a place for a Shadowrun.

I'm not from the area, but this is weather underground's records for
Calgary, Alberta, for October 2003.

Replace the 2003 to get other years.

Great! That's to say, I doubt my players will like it, but I sure do :)

They went past Calgary (coming from Seattle), so they wouldn't be near
modern-day British Columbia.

I don't think they need more problems than they already have. However, that
won't stop me from giving them a few, so suggestions are welcome :)
