Alright you Netheads who want to see the Matrix: How many of you have
heard of Mosaic? Available for the mac, Windows, and X-Windows.

It's hypertext for the net. Documents from *any* available site on the
net can be linked to a stack. This includes audio and graphic files.

Yes, it's like lynx, only *better*

You tell it how to decode certain filetypes. You then tell it what
application to lauch a certain filetype as.

Like most hypertext, sections of text can be clicked on to connect to
other documents. However, you can also click on areas that access sound
and graphic files.

It's new. It's amazing, It's Mosaic, from NCSA (Champaigne)

Bah. Mosiac is a glorified gopher :-)

Actually, I don't have access to Xwindows to macs witht he software, so
I've never used it (although I'm pushing for at least getting Lynx, the
ascii version of mosaic, installed, but admin's really cranky.

Recognized that admin is admittedly crank. THis is just a clarificatio (now
that I'm a little calmer. Prozac goes great with Coke :)

Mosaic and its text-based cousin, Lynx (which is available on IO.COM)
are not the same as a pure gopher. The whole idea behind them both is
to have pre-established links; if the links aren't already in place, you
will indeed have to know which site and directory has the file you're
looking for; only then can you add it to your stack. IMO I believe it
will be a beeter way for people to browse given areas, such as al Shadowrun
stuff archived on the net. Someone sould access the stack, and then select
to view and even download files at teetot, umich, or anywhere else on the
net. Of course, they can only get what's been added to the list, but that's
what good archivists are for :)

If you already race through with Unix, then no, Mosaic and Lynx aren't
great leaps forward. But if you're a newbie, or even some poor slob who
suddenly has access to the net because the cable company added it to your
subscription, Mosaic is a far less arcane way of surfing the net.

I'm not sure I understand your point, other than the fact hat you don't
have X-windows or the Mac version of Mosaic. It is available for at least
3 platforms (Windows, X-Windows, and the Mac) and is *free*, I believe,
from NCSA - they even have a home stack set up there. It is also archived
several placed - you can get it from here, but I'm not sure how to connect
to the machine it was on (I was surprised to learn the machine it's on was
on the utulsa system - I thought it was only Applelinked through the campus).

BTW, Rob, mail me about where one can get Unix, X-Windows, FTP software,
Pine, pico, and tin (among other things). I know some people interested
in starting a freenet in the area.

Ok, let me try again. I don't have an Xwindows terminal or a direct link
myself. On the campus as a whole, we have mosiac installed on krypton
and four xterminals in one lab, but none of the macs or windows stations
have it.

I'm trying to get admin to install lynx so that everyone can use WWW
without having to have X or something.

Yup, I've seen, and played with it. (BLATANT PLUG: I have a local Prog Rock
radio show. In a week or 2 (hopefully not 3), it will be semi-connected to
the net via gopher (audio clips, pix, lyrics, playlists, etc), further
bulletins as events...well, you know)

And the scary part: I went and looked at Rat's page. *grin* Pretty
interesting. Liked the links, and the legowar pic.

Mosaic was release in the beginning part of 1992, I
believe. Since it was released, usage of the World
Wide Web has literally exploded. (Can't remember the
percentage off the top of my head, but it was VERY
large.)
