There's an idea I've been bouncing around for quite some time, and
recently I've finally decided to go thru with it [as the saying goes,
take a crap, or get off the john.] I'd like to run a Shadowrun PBEM, and
invite anyone who's interrested to join. Just send in a submission for
the character you'd like to play [specifics later], and I'll get back to
you ASAP with MINOR suggestions, etc. I'm not just looking for a
collection of stats, but a LITTLE back story on who your character is,
and how he got to this point in life.
Now, alot of you are asking, 'Just who is this guy, anyway, and why
should I be interrested instead of bloody well annoyed?', so I'll give
you a brief little synopsis on myself.
I've been playing Shadowrun LITERALLY since the first edition came
out. During my stint in the NAVY, it kept us occupied on the quarterdeck
during many a night on board ship, when we couldn't get off the bloody
thing. Despite being overseas most of the time, we kept up with all the
modules and sourcebooks almost as soon as they came out [it pays to have
friends in Supply :-]. We were pretty inexperienced when we started, and
we made some pretty embarrasing mistakes and interpretations back then
<wince!> But as we became more experienced, we started to derive a much
more pleasure in roleplaying over ROLLPLAYING.
I've been to Venezula, Palma de Mayorca, Cairo, Jibutti [no, I'm
not kidding, it is a real place], Naples, Portugal, Costa Rica, and alot
of places inbetween. I've was almost shot in Al Jemal [NEVER forget your
ID card in a foreign country, and try to sneak onto a naval base!], and
gotten drunk with guys from the Australia's version of the Foreign
Legion [I still can't remember what happened for six hour that night,
but I can recall a friend of mine talking into a seashell]. Watched
Patriots and Skuds criscross overhead, and saw a holed supertanker on
fire, slowly sinking into the dark sea.
We ALMOST downed another american Naval vessel [computer glitch; boy,
were they mad :-], and were nearly blown out of the water by the NIMITZ
when a missle they fired flopped on it's side, and launched straight off
the deck. Guys top side said it passed so close, you could read the
lettering on the side. Of course, I can neither confirm nor deny whether
it was live or not. [it's been a few years, so this stuff shouldn't be
TOO sensitive anymore. At least WE didn't run our aircraft carrier [I
won't name names :-] onto a sandbarge!
After I retired form active duty, I moved back to Boston, where I'd
spent a good deal of time before, adn fell in love with the city. I
hooked up with the core group, that I've been gaming with, on and off,
for some 4 years now.
I've been in good games and bad. I've seen GMs who were WAY to
tight arsed about letting their players do anything, and others who
literally let their players get away with murder. Along the way, I've
picked up tips from both, and I'm still learning all the time. Pretty
much I'm still a fan for BIG action, but I've also love character
interaction and cohesive storylines as well.
Partly I'm doing this to relieve my creative muse [even with going
out, running a Shadowrun game, and working, I still have FAR too much
mental time on my hands.] And, I'm hoping it gives those people
interrested in gaming, but for one reason or another, can't hook up with
a group, a chance to play. [I know what those dry spells can be like.]
Getting to game specifics: the game will start 1MAY, 2058. While,
in the course of play, it may range across the world, it will primarily
be around the Eurotheater. I'll try and be as faithful as I can with my
depictions of different areas, but if I hit one of the players stomping
grounds, and they disagree with me on something, just zip me a separate
e-mail and let me know. I'm always will to learn more about other
cultures.
Characters may be generated using starting rules [I am allowing
Char Gen Rules from the Shadowrun Supplemental. Just run it by me first
so I can see how it turns out, and whether it fits in the game. After
creation, add an aditional 20 Karma Points to flesh out the character,
on skills, etc. Warning, I guage a game by the character coming in, and
match the opponents to his power level to sufficiently challenge them.
Characters may be from any background or metatype [Again, see
Shadowrun Supplemental. If you don't have it, don't worry about it. I
make sure everything evens out on this end.
Characters will begin play on their own. Over the course you will
encounter other PCs and NPCs, with whom you may either ignore, form
alliances with, eat, whatever. If you hook up with a player whose a PC,
you'll be allowed to exchange information and plot together [I won't
tell you till after you've decided if that's what you want to do.]
Turns will run roughly every 2 days to 2 weeks, depending on the
personal needs and time constraints of the players [individual round
time can be hammered out to what ever you feel comfortable with].
I'm even toying tying in events with my on going Shadowrun game :-]
Like I said, it's pretty ambitious. If it works, I'll try to make
it as kewl as possible. If not, well, hey, at least I gave it a shot.
Send any comments to me directly, and I'll spell out the details. Till
then, have a good one.

Of coooooourse I'd be interested in joining a pbem...

I'll give you a couple of choices; all are starting characters (pick
whichever strikes you as the most pleasing, and I'll dump stats on you
later.)

o Meth: Professional forger. Primarily paintings - you know, those
old oil-and-canvas things? - but has recently been dabbling in
electronic art - which, naturally, has lead him straight into decking.
He's great at the slow-paced stuff - give him a weekend and a reel of
him and he'll have it doctored up perfectly - but the real-time speed of
the Matrix throws him.
Being a forger, he has a lot of contacts with various high-society
types, as well as shadier underworld characters. At present, no debts
or direction in life, but that's where the pbem steps in.
Pros: Not your typical decker. Can schmooze with the best of them.
Knows his Monet from his Monat. Cons: Definitely not a combat
character - real-life or the Matrix.

o Skjald: Samurai. Norwegian, currently employed as security by a
freight company. Claims to have visions from Bear; into astrology and
occultism. [Out-of-campaign: Test-bed for Magic Priority C ideas.]
Firm he works for reputed to have ties with Russian Mafia. Well-rounded
cyberware.
Pros: A bit more aware of magic than other mundanes. Cons: Much
more superstitious of magic than other mundanes. Bearish nature makes
him more compassionate than necessary.

o Termite. *Hermetic* mage. If he cared enough, he'd be bothered by
people's reaction to his name. He's *not* an Insect shaman, dammit!
Gypsy blood fierce in his veins, wanders a lot - like a termite, he
works his way into woodwork of society.
Pros: Magic always an asset. Street survival learned from Gypsies;
known to have traveled from India to Morocco to Denmark. Cons: Acts
like a Gypsy; sometimes openly flouts laws and culture. Brash; has
learned how not to care too well.

Hope you enjoy...

Please send them to the GM instead of sending them to the list.

Just thought with the three characters someone might be interested in
picking up on them -- they're available for --tk, too.

(That being said, I'm sending a frame out to buy the freakin' manual..)
