That's one that only works today, not when SR was created -- in 1989, MS
wasn't a really major player. Sure, they'd written MS-DOS for IBM but that
was about it as far as widespread use of their software was concerned. (I
remember using Windows 1.something on an 8086 around that time, though,
and not liking it at all :)

Two things. One, in the US at least, if you bought a PC from a store, it had
MS-DOS on it, or came with MS-DOS disks(A couple of the Tandy line actually
had it hardwired into the computer). The only exception was IBM PCs, which
used PC-DOS rarely at that point. Two, I see that not much has changed with
Windows since Win1.x then. =)

That's what I meant -- apart from MS-DOS/PC-DOS (basically the same thing,
AFAIK) Microsoft didn't really make much in the way of well-known
software. That only started to change a few years later with the
bug-ridden Windows 3.0 and its fixed (depending on who you talk to)
follow-up, Windows 3.1. But this was in the early 1990s, _after_ FASA
wrote up the very small bit about Microdeck, and the somewhat larger bits
that turned Redmond into a shittown.

Not true. They were one of the biggest
producers of programing languages as well,
although they didn't have the market domination
there that they do now.

Double-Domed Mike, who was there.

I didn't really know about the programming languages, but I still feel my
point stands -- not everyone uses programming languages, but everyone
uses an OS of some kind or other, which is what most people knew MS for, I
think.

I was partly there :)

Well, that's because even then, MS BASIC was utter crap.

At least they're maintaining some product consistency....

back then no one really cared what DOS you were using.
Hell, the Amiga computers ran Microsoft Basic

Actually, according to one of my friends, Visual BASIC 5.0 is getting used
alot in programming Win95 apps and the like. Of course, this could be a mian
reason why Win95 is so damned buggy.... =)

Well, that's the problem. Maybe if we HAD cared, we wouldn't be saddled with
Win95! (Or even better, go back in time and stop Microsoft from buying CP/M,
and maybe we'd all be using UNIX. =) )

Wolfstar, who LIKES Basic....
