I do remember posts in the past (relating to other
topics) mentioning that each soldier were kitted out
with enormous amounts of firepower/ ammunition (IIRC
300 - 400 rounds in vietnam?) as much as they could
carry or attach to themselves/webbing.

IIRC the lighter the gear got through R & D the more
gear you were expected to "Hump", I think that
statement was refering to how much MAWs have changed &
disposable 1 shot tubes etc.

So If you are playing a soldier or a merc aren't you
expected to be armed to the teeth as In RL, (you can't
tell me that the average rifleman or scout in a
Infantry platoons a munchkin).

300-400 rounds? Surely you jest. 300-400 rounds is _basic_ load for your
personal weapon.

Then you add more rounds for the LSW/SAW in the section. If you have a
manoeuvre support section, you'll be carrying a hundred or two rounds of
7.62 link for them. You'll also have a few hand grenades, two rifle
grenades, possibly a bomb or two for the 51mm...

For an advance to contact where you expect to meet the enemy, figure
800-1000 rounds per man being carried. More in reserve with the section
2ICs and platoon sergeants.

Different environment. You can't hide *that* much ammunition under a
coat, and the cops will arrive before you've fired much of it off.

OTOH, Robert de Niro's team in "Heat" were mercs; get in and out
undetected if possible, but if the cops show up be prepared to outgun
them. Ditto, actually, for de Niro's character in "Ronin"; mostly just
carries a pistol, but quite happy to use grenade launchers, missiles and
LMGs as the mission demands.

Maybe it depends on the situation ;) For field comba in a warzoneis
much different to covered work in the City and while it may be nice to
have a LAW or MAW or MG or whatever with you one must ask himself it
that more firepower is worth the higher exposure one will recive for
jut looking fucking dangerously... ut that ofcourse depends on how you
view Police and Security organisations in your Campaign.
