Hey everyone! What do you listen to (if at all) when you play Shadowrun?
Hmmm?

We looove listening to the Air Heads CD song..."Born to Raise Hell"
during fight scenes and virtually any other song off that album...also
"Big Gun" from AC/DC...

Any recommendations? tips?

I could recommend Def Leppard "Fractured Love" off their Retro Active album.

Or Herbie with "Right Type of Mood" (a kinda rap like thing...but not really)

How about the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers, or any Ministry (my fellow
gammers hate it). We usually end up with Fields of Nephilum (goth band), our
gamemaster/hosts cd. Somehow, old punk 7" are to distracting.

Actually I listen to the "Johnny Mnemonic" CD. I find it has the flair
needed.

The other album I use often would be "The Crow". The music on this CD is
excelent for those down right cool bar seens. You know we all have them.

I also listen to "Batman Forever", "Hackers", and a few others.

Maybe we're weird, but my groups usually don't bother with background
music. It's often distracting; too loud and it's annoying, too quiet and
people concentrate on trying to hear it, and getting Type O Negative or
Joy Division during a romantic scene just sucks.

I kind of like a little White Zombie "More Human Than Human"

kind of describes most shadowrunners, neh?

Anything with an attitude and fast tempo usually does it.

Try reading the lyrics sometime. "I am the Nexus One / I want more life,
fucker, I ain't done, yeah."

White Zombie songs, especially the stuff on "Astro-Creep 2000: Songs of
Love, Destruction, and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head"
(yes, that's the full title :), are rife with SF references and
in-jokes.

I just meant that the music as a whole, not the content, was what is cool.

I mean if you have time to decifer lyrics at a game, then there is something
wrong.

I strictly meant as background noise

Well if all you want is back ground noise Boihazard, Pantera, NIN, Type O
Negative, or anything along that line. Don`t get me wrong I do like these
bands they just make really good back ground music (probably cause i ve
heard them all so much =8^)

Likewise. We have enough trouble with the phone ringing and people
wandering in/out. Trying to deal with music at the same time would be
a pain. Myself, I usually can't listen to music AND do something else at
the same time.. Guess that makes me weird, too. >8->

Go with NIN from Pretty Love Hate machine with track four, the Revenge
song. Too ultimate! And also the first song on the album. I'm not a
alternative music lover, but it fits so well. T
Then I would go with the Pulp Fiction Cd. The whole thing. I found
great use for it.

I think the only ways to get background music to suit the scene is when
it's obvious the players are not going anywhere soon so you have the time
to play a CD or tape without it reaching inappropriate music, or having a
5-CD changer and a good knowledge of what's where.
We usually just put on a semi-random CD and turn the volume real low so
it's just background music; that of course means you could be listening to
Therapy? during a romantic moment, but I don't think anybody pays muc
attention to the music anyway...

I don't know about the kids but I do know that tv is one of the greatest
threats to roleplaying there is. If you turn on the tv in the same room
you're playing in, 3/4 of the players will watch it more than the game in
question...

That and Magic: The Addiction. We had to ban Magic cards from our house
completely ecause the the Magic addicts would start a game while their
characters weren't doing anything, and then when I came around to them we
had to threaten to burn their decks to get them back to SR.

That and computer games; we have a real problem with a game called
Spaceward Ho!; almost all the players have powerbooks that they
keep their characters on, and they'll start playing this. Even our
GM did once. It's not just distracting, it's rude; it's saying,"This
computer game is way more important and interesting than you guys."

Watch out for Sculpey clay too. We had some to make improve mini's
out of, and it got out of hand with people playing with it. (sculpey

One of my players routinely brings his 8-month old daughter to
our gaming sessions, and it's not a problem at all. Every once in a
while he needs to get up and do baby-stuff (heating bottles, changing,
etc.), but most of the time she just burbles and giggles and drools all
over herself. As long as we keep her away from the dice (which she'll
try to eat), everything's cool.

well, personally I as a gm, usually put on some of the following:
techno (some of the technotrax cd's)
Front 242
Frontline assembly
Cat rapes dog (Swedish band, that is rather interesting.)
The music to movies like Hardware, the Crow and such.

And once actually a specific song by "dead can dance" (who plays

Alright, another "Industrial Music" fan. (I mean in the original, ReSearch
sense). We might have as big a contigent as the Queensryche fans. Actually,
i like Slayer, but not for gamming. We had one tpe I loved for gaming- a
house music band that had a squat in Austrailia that they fought the cops out
of on eviction day, taping the wole thing. Half ambient techno, Half warzone,
very excellent. The tape vanished. Anyone know the band?

Try using the sound track of Highlander. It's called
by several different titles depending on the country
you are in. Queen preforms all the music and in the
US it goes under the title of "A Kind of Magic"

Yeah, but last time we played I had to make some finishing touches to the
adventure while the players where there, and it was that time on Sunday
afternoon that the Babylon 5 / SQ:DSV duo is on. Boy, did that help.

Depends on the scene. I don't have much music for SR. I find having
Carmina Burana, some Vagelis, a little Jarre, Return to the Source and
Order Odonata (that's Goa Trance, not that any of you might know about
it) handy. Generally, however, music never quite worked with roleplaying.
A notable exeption was when we recently played a port of Storyteller to a
fantasy setting (of my own conception).

Exactly, this happens with us too. It's a rare CD that has the right music
for everything, AND doesn't run out before the scene ends, AND you can flip
by hand. Tapes are hopeless, you need random access. Perhaps if I had a
MiniDisc and bothered to prepare, I could cook something up, but I strongly
doubt it.

Heh. 8 months is nice.. Watch out when the kid gets to be a year old or
more. THEN it'll get distracting.. My group had to institute a "No Baby"
rule for exactly that reason. (One of the players was trying to babysit
and run shadows at the same time.)

Since then we've extended the "No Baby" rule to keeping the TV on, extended
phone conversations, too much homework, or blowing up the kitchen. (Just
hypothetically, of course.) >8->

I like to use the Johnny Mnemonic soundtrack (I know, I know, don't
assault me with thwaps!) and some of the more technical music out there.
For example, in fight scenes, I like to use KMFDM, while in "high
society" party scenes I like to use techno.

We sometimes use a mixed up 6-pack of Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys,
KMFDM, and some Mozart or Beethoven to really liven things up ;-). Primus is
also great for background noise. (The stereo is in another room so it isn't
quite as distracting as if it were.) Put the whole mess on random and voila!

Gee, I remember when my kids were that portable *sigh*. They're 6 and 2 now,
and much less easy to deal with....

Fortunately, one of the couples we regularly game with has a daughter who's
9, who comes with them, and she does wonders keeping the other two
entertained.

Tell me about it, I had to almost kick a player out of the group because
he would always either start a game, or whine until someone humored him
enough to play. It got very annoying. I didn't threaten harm to his cards
though, he would have freaked. I just pulled him aside and told him
semi-politely to knock it off.

Ummm. This really didn't have a point other than saying I know what you mean.

It seems the best place to play an RPG is in a locked room with only
furniture, food, and books concerning the game at hand, doesn't it? :)

This reminds me of the time my PCs were in a club in Chicago (veterans of
this list might remember my plea for help with the adventure earlier this
year :), and I just used my normal method of music selection -- grab a CD,
put it in the player, and press "play." After the session was over I of
course remebered that I had 06:21:03:11 Up Evil, which would have been
nearly ideal to play that night :(

I've two cousins, one of 8 and one of 6, who are not normally around when
we play but when they are they're usually pretty interested in what we're
doing :)

When my 6 year old is a little older and has a longer attention span, we
already have a character set up for him: A 10 year old Physical Adept, the
nephew of one of the major NPCs.

the sound track of the super Nintendo Game Shadowrun
