I just thought I'd mention that the soundtrack to `Batman Returns' makes
for pretty awesome background music if you're trying to create an atmosphere

Ach, one of my favorite topics, that of appropriate thematic melodies . . .

Herr Elfman's music is recieving increasing acclaim, and not without good
reason, of course not without reason.

Along that line, other titles . . .

Bram Stoker's Dracula Wojciech Kilar
Army of Darkness Joseph Le Duca and Danny Elfman
Conan the Barbarian Basil Poledouris
Darkman Danny Elfman
Lord of the Rings (certain sections) Leonard Roseman

Also highly recommended:

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor J. S. Bach (preferably on organ)
Symphonie Fantastique Berlioz
The Planets Holst
In the Hall of the Mountain King (Peter Gynt Suite) Edvard Grieg
Night on Bald Mountain Mussorgsky

plus . . .

The opening and closing movement's to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.

Yeah, I'm not really into classical stuff, I must admit, but I get the
impression that a bunch of classical CD compilations and a programmable CD
player could add up to some pretty awesome music for games...

I'd like to get my hands on the soundtrack for Bladerunner - I saw the
Director's Cut the other night, and it was the first time I saw Bladerunner
in a year or two... The music was awazing... And the film itself is great
for showing just before a Shadowrun session, to help set the scene, so to
speak...

Speaking of films of the kind, has anyone seen Nemesis, and, if so, what did
they think of it?

I always liked making a theme tape for each character... My rigger, for
instance, when in a solo situation with the GM, has a tape for mood.
I play songs like:
East Bound and Down Jerry Reed
Hot Rod Lincoln (when I can find a copy)
Tickin' in my Head Redone by Anthrax
Warriors of Metal Anthrax
I'm the Man '94 Anthrax
Most of these are particularly appropriate for riggers, but can be used
in a lot of games (Warriors of Metal is great for a Btech game BTW), and
lend a tad bit of adrenaline to a game at appropriate intervals. All of
them are hard and fast songs. WoM is also good for sams...

Music for shadowrun???

I have been toying with the idea of snatching the background
music from Mortal Kombat and putting it on a tape.
Just something tense for my players...

Ah, I forgot one. The whole "Oxygene" tape by Jean-Michel Jarre lends
itself great to SF campaigns.

More thoughts on music:

The Predator II Soundtrack suits a chase through the Sprawl
Alice in Chains is good music, and _The_Rooster_ is a great
combat song (if I have the song's title somewhat wrong, it's because
I always leech off my friends, who all seem to have that album).
Bladerunner can be good, but is often too moody for SR play.
Certain parts of the Cool World Soundtrack are good, too.

Well, I really like 'Revolution' and 'Rendez-vous' for decking. The
soundtrack for 'Cool World' and the soundtrack for 'Thief' (by Tangerine
Dream) are good for general atmosphere of a good run. Also, for an
Astral quest I really enjoy almost anything by They Might Be Giants :-).

The Music for M.K. II is already on C.D. you can get it by writing to the
makers of M.K. II, I believe that most machines will advertise the C.D. and
let you know just how much it will cost to aquire it.

We have a 5-CD turntable that we always stock and put on random. Some of
the CD's we usually put in:

Skinny Puppy: we've got all of 'em
Carl Oorf: Carmina Burina
Lots of other classical: Wagner, Beethoven, that russian guy...
Louis Armstrong: (just for the hell of it)
Yello: One Second
Ozric Tentacles: The "Kellogg" box set
Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, AC/DC, Led Zeppellin,
Soundgarden, Tool(Undertow), Black Sabbath, Motorhead,
and about a 12" stack of various Techno/House/Rave/Trance
CD's I picked up here and in Germany.
Nine Inch Nails, Front 242...

For the Astral plains I like Kitaro's Atral Voyage.
Go figure.
Anything by Elfman is pretty good.
Metallica has a few good ones.
Iron Maiden too, as well as AC/DC.
Mike & The Mechanics, Styx, and Simple
Minds do well for more relaxing scenes.

if you want to make 'em tense..try getting one of those sound
effects cds and what stuff like gunfire starts happening in the run
put your cd player on repeat and select the apropriate sound effect I did
this a couple of times..it really threw the guys off..

Sting's music is great for a moody atmosphere - especially for games like SR
and 'Vampire: The Masquerade' (Check out 'Moon over Bourbon Street'!)

Does anyone out there have the Bladerunner soundtrack?
If so, what's it like?

I saw 'Bladerunner: The Director's Cut' the other night, not having seen 'Runner
for something like five years, and I caught a documentary on Philip K. Dick,
who wrote the novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep', that the film was
based on. He also wrote 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale', upon which the
film 'Total Recall' was based...

As an aside - Dick said that the makers of the film had captured _perfectly_
the atmosphere, and the look, sounds, and feel of the world he had imagined
when writing the novel 'Do Androids..', but that he wasn't happy with the
storyline, which had ben altered extensively... ( In the novel, Decker kills
replicants to earn money so that he can save up enough to buy a real sheep - He
only has a robot sheep at the moment, and he's terrified that his neighbours
will find out that he isn't wealthy enough to afford a real sheep. Funnily
enough, he ends up buying an ostrich, which gets thrown of the top of his
building by Rachel, in a fit of rage, after he tells her that she's not
human. )

I was listening to my Led Zeppelin CDs this morning and I thought "No Quarter"
might be good for one of those "spooky" parts. It's got a lot of really good
wavery keyboard parts, and its about 6 or seven minutes long.
