Hi this is possibly the first thread I start off. :-)
I gm and play, (isn't it great having two gms in a group?) anywho I have just
design a new pc called Mikel Strusnov, He is a Mongoose Shaman (one of the
nerps books) and he has a contact, so I here you say, This contact is a free
spirit (asbetous sheild at the ready) Mikel grew up somewhere in africa, with
his mum who was also a mage, she had an aly then when she was killed aly goes
free becomes anima free spirit (coz mikel and his mum treated it real well)
who decided that its goal is to protect mikel. that was 10 yrs previous and
now the spirit goes round helping other kids in need, but it still has a
special link with mikel ie it stays near him (same city), it was this spirit
that taught him the ways of magic. My gm (the other one) Said al this was
fine, and gave me an additional akrma point for comming up with such an
original idea ( I haven't read any of the sr novels)
So whaddya fink?
Tim (not the other one)

I think it would be a cool contact as long as the player isn't trying to
use it as a munchkin killing device I think it offers some great
role-playing outlets.

Yeah not bad. In fact a few of my players have a free spirit as a contact.
Of course they don't know she's a free spirit they think she's just a
fixer (and possibly a mage). She is a player, not chummy with nayone, and
none of them can contact her directly, instead they leave messages at teh
Jackal's Lantern in Redmond. :)

I think teh key is to balance out teh power of teh contact with how much
influence the PC has with that contact.

<snip: Anima as contact>
My first reaction: Ack! Not in my game! Never!
My second reaction: Well, you know, as long as the spirit wasn't following the
character around all the time, just friendly in general, and as long as its force was
something reasonable, it wouldn't be so bad. After all, if you can have a Yakuza
boss as a contact, why not a spirit? (on the other hand, you can have A yakuza
boss, not THE yakuza boss, if you know what I mean).
I would definitely have the GM chose the spirit's powers, not the player, and give
the spirit many other interests besides the player so that the spirit is, well, a
contact, not a back-door way to get an ally.
