So, I see that (at least here in the States) McDonald's is now giving away
these "Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog" action figures with a Happy Meal.
Evidently, these Mystic Knights also have their own half-hour cartoon show,
which I freely admit I've never seen.

My questions are:

1. What is the Shadowrun tie-in, if any, to these Mystic Knights?

2. Is there some other reference to a Tir Na Nog in common mythology that
I'm missing?

Please enlighten me.

Tir Nan Og as it is properly said is the mystic isle of elves in Celtic
religion which is also where one goes as a sort of after-life. This is the
next life after the physical one on Earth in which everyone is immortal and
lives in peace in a sort of Heaven of the Celtic religion. There are other
small specifics about Tir Nan Og but there were never any Mystic Knights of
any sorts, unless during all of my research into it I have missed
something, but I highly doubt it.

I'm glad I could put my two-cents worth into this list since I mostly just

OK, who's got a carp? get the wet carp. (I get to do my first
thwapping...ooo!) Mystic Knights is a commerical American cartoon not
done by WB, which means no killing, utterly simplistic, and poor
character design. (Oh yeah, those anime-lovin' roots are beginning to
show...) Shadowrun is quite the opposite, so no tie-in. There are
Cyberknights in Tir na Nog, and some Warriors of the Northern Paths
(?), but no Mystic Knights, at least none that I can remember, and if
there are, I think they'd be high-level initiate mages and physads,
and a lot meaner and more violent than the Mystic Knights (saw the
toon, hated the toon, went back to Batman Beyond for my Saturday
morning cartoon dose).

While I'm thinking about cartoons, would it be possible to make a
shamanic conjuring adept based on a Pokemon trainer? Uh...summoning a
storm spirit that looks like a chubby yellow devil rat...

The term is Gaelic for "the land," I believe (I know I'm wrong on this
one). Where's that sourcebook when I need it? Better yet, where's my

I have never seen it either but it is in the same vein as the Mighty
Morphing Power Rangers. Live action not animated.

Heh none, imaging Hercules meets the the Power Rangers (scary I know) and
that's the show. If anything it would be closer related to Earthdawn.

Yes, Tir Na Nog comes from Celtic Mythology (that's why Shadowrun named
Ireland Tir Na Nog) It means the Land Of Plenty (among many other
meanings) it is slightly analogous to the Christian Heaven. It is also
the land of the faries, some Arthurian Legends have him sailing to Tir Na
Nog (which is closely associated with Avalon here) after his battle with
Mordred. Until the last 5 years or so I would not have called Celtic
Mythology common, but with the success of such shows as Riverdance, Lord
of the Dance, Braveheart, and others all things Gaelic are much more at
the forefront of public consciousness than at any time (atleast here in
America). Heck, Loreena Mckennett even had a hit song.

THWAP!
Nice try, but no.
MN is a LIVE ACTION show, not a cartoon. Small difference, yes, but still
important especially because ...
MN is a Saban (think Power Rangers) produced ripoff of an existing Japanese
program.(Just like - you guessed it! Power Rangers)
If you check out the original series (name escapes me right now) you'll find
a MUCH better plot, better acting, and a LOT more fun mindless violence! ;-)

As for tha "Anime-lovin' roots" when you know the whole story it makes more
sense, no? ;-)

I'll grant you one thing ... the American rip-off sucks royal choad.

>>2. Is there some other reference to a Tir Na Nog in common mythology

It's one of several Celtic realms mentioned in their mythology.
It was alternatively a realm of the fae, Heaven, or something like Valhalla,
a realm where warriors could retire to eternal battle and glory.
That does to into SR, as when the elves took control ofIreland, they renamed
it Tir-Nan-Nog to give it a mystic feel, and reshape it;s identity as an
elven nation.
Check out the Tir Tairgire Sourcbook for more info.

Tir Na Nog is Irish for "Land of Youth", and features prominently in the
Ossain and (I believe) Fenian cycles of Irish myth. The home of the shide,
a land where no one ever grows old. Ironically enough (from a Shadowrun
perspective) it was supposed to be over the sea, west of Ireland, not the
isle itself.

The Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog is a Celtic version of the Power Rangers
(and Live-action, not cartoon) and should be avoided (IMO) at all costs
:).

None except that which you (or anyone else) want to create.

Not my field. :)

I forgot about that, but matters not. Live or animated, suck is still
suck.

Maybe. There aren't a lot of things more fun than completely
unjustified, gratuitous anime violence.

Completely off the subject, I remember there was a Japanese manga
version of SR a few years back. That, and why isn't there a Japan
sourcebook? FASA's done every place in the world but, and that seems
strange, especially sicne Japan plays such an important part in the SR
world.

>I'll grant you one thing ... the American rip-off sucks royal choad.

Most kid's shows based in the US do. And Saban's worse than most, as
they take away everything that made the Japanese version so much fun
in the first place (can you imagine them taking over the Robotech or
Voltron projects...? Ugh!) In general, I tend to dislike most US
animations, though Groening is bringing back to a mature level.
Exceptions: The Batman stuff is cool (better and truer to the comic
than the movies, and that's just the tip of the iceberg), as is the
Superman stuff and Batman Beyond (still need to find that first
episode! I missed the premiere!).

Minor quibble here but to early (read pre Roman conquest) Celts living on
the British mainland Ireland was frequently considered to be Tir Na Nog.
Remember that early they were all Celts not Welsh and Irish. It was also
possible (if dangerous) for a mortal to sail to Tir Na Nog and back.

In my campaign for example, Saban Entertainment (makers of Power
Rangers et. al.) was sued into bankruptcy by a class action
anti-defamation suit brought by the entire elvish population of Tir Na
Nog. :)

(RJR Nabisco suffered a similar fate over the trademark "Keebler
Elves", except it was every elf on the planet who sued them.)
