This is how I envision what happens in Space with regards to Magic and the
Astral.

The atmosphere of earth is a barrier to true astral. True astral is a void,
such as space is an airless void. True astral is a void because there
exists nothing to generate Mana within a reasonable distance. In effect
mages why go astral see a place of infinitisimal vastness, with nothing
inhabiting it.....but its own emptiness. The mages brain can not cope with
this possibility (as it can not cope with Virtual Reality). The idea
of there being absolutely nothing is incomprehensible...but it is true.
WHen faced with this truth, the mage is driven mad, possibly to the point
of hemorraging within his brain and causing death. So far none have actually
survived to explain what this is like. Since there is nothing in astral
"space" then no magic can be made to occur. But, given enough power and
a large enough collection of mana generating objects (people, life, etc.),
then small pockets of occupied astral may be created. These pockets will
probably have a large background count (to simulate the small amount of
astral compared to the earth) which would make casting spells possible,
although difficult. And would actually allow a mage to contact the metaplanes.
This would be extremely difficult also.

Why isn't astral pockets formed from a couple people on a space station?

1) Not enough energy to form the pocket.
2) The energy from these people just drains off into space (such as air
in a vacuum).
3) Some containment mechanism is needed to actually restrain the pocket.
How this is accomplished is not known yet. But some thoughts. The earth's
astral gradual becomes empty as the altitude approaches the edge of
the atmosphere. Perhaps by creating a small atmosphere in space this
could act as a barrier so that the mana drifts out slower. This would
require that a space station actually generate an atmosphere and have
a large amount of life on it, so that it could have any amount of astral.

This is not to say that some creatures have not actually adapted to this
emptiness and have become....changed. Although these creatures would
not generate mana, they may feed upon it if given the chance.
