Grounding is simple to explain...

Grounding
A magical active object or spell opens a conection from the physical
to the
astral, allowing so other magical energies to flow through this open
cannal.
On the physical plane only a physical present object ca be effected.
If a
only astral present object like a spell is the target only the spell
will be
effected and nothing more. If a physical object is the target then
the
magical energies flow out from the object into the physical plane, a
single
target spell will only effect the actual object, a area effect spell
will
effect anything and everyone in its effect area with equal force.
Only spells
that can effect physical objects can be cast onto physical objects in
this
way.

Really??? Let's take a look at this...shall we? ;)

Okay, now for part of the reason Grounding is so confusing. It doesn't open
a "canal" from the physical to the astral. It goes from the Astral (where
the mana/energy resides) to the Physical (where the end destination is likely
at).

> On the physical plane only a physical present object ca be effected.

??? In the astral plane, only a present dual natured object can be effect in
such a way as to present the opportunity for a "grounding" attempt.

Except that a spell cannot be targetted by another spell....house rules aside
of course...

Actually, if the spell is a single target spell, then only the dual natured
object (foci or being) is subject to the effects of the spell.

If it (the spell) is an area spell, then anything in immediate contact with
the foci is targettable.

I admit, that it's the difference between single target and area spells being
grounded through/into an object that has always confused me just a bit. So
this last part concerning what can be influenced by an area spell I may have
wrong.

This is (was, depending upon your viewpoint) correct.
