Beware! do not let your PC's use followers as cannon fodder, to save their
own hide, besides I like the look on my players faces when followers
start considering their own life expectancy, turn and flee just as things
get really dicey. :)

With regards to developing followers/buddies and their ilk, how do the
rest of you deal with improving their skills to keep up with PCs, if at
all? And who chooses which skills they should improve GM or PC?

Yes, I love that, too and no, NPCs aren't slaves in my campaign.

Hmmm...Improve the threat rating seems the right way for me.
The GM should choose the skills and (never) the PC.
