I had an idea concerning diseases and toxin in shadowrun as I was falling
asleep last night, got up and wrote it down, and after waking up this
morning it still sounds good.

With my disease "combat" rules it's not easy to balance the numbers. And
making a simple disease, like the common cold, is a pain. I think the
following fixes that.

After exposure the disease rolls dice equal to it's infection rating
vs the target's Body. If the disease gets any successes it has infected
the character. BTW, diseases which mutate rapidly, are uncommon, or
typically lethal
have a high infection rating. Common diseases have a lower infection
rating. The disease will get modifiers to the infection test based on such
things as type of exposure, length of exposure, and target's
bio-/cyberware, magic, etc.

If the disease successfully infects the character, the disease and the
character's immune system will enter into battle. Both the character and
the disease make a damage resistance test based on the progression rate of
the disease. For example, if disease has a progression rate of 24 hours,
the damage resistance tests are made once every 24 hours.

The character makes a damage resistance test vs the disease's power and
damage level. The disease makes a damage resistance test vs (Character's
Body)M (note, damage done to the disease is always physical). In general,
most diseases inflict stun damage (the symptoms expressed by the battle
between the disease and the immune system). If a damage done by a disease
overflows into physical damage, the target does not fall unconscious (but
he feels like hell as the wound modifiers start to rack up). As per the
combat rules, wound modifiers to not affect damage resistance tests vs
diseases.

Common Cold: Infection Rating 5 (fairly common, but highly mutable),
Progression Rate of 2 days, Resistance of 2, 6L.

A character with a Body of 4 is exposed to the Common Cold. The disease
makes rolls 5 dice (it's infection rating) vs a 4 (the character's Body),
and rolls 2 successes. The disease has successfully infected the character.

Two days later the character and the disease make damage resistance tests.
The character rolls 4 dice vs a 6L, and rolls one success. The character
takes a Light wound. The disease rolls 2 dice vs a 4M and fails to get any
successes. The disease takes a Moderate wound. Two days later pretty much
the same thing happens and the character now has two boxes of damage and
the disease has 6 boxes of damage. Assuming things don't change, two days
later the character is at a Moderate wound and the Disease is just about
finished. Two days later the character's immune system finally fineshes
off the disease, but not before the disease inflicts another Light wound.
After a total of 8 days the character has 4 boxes of damage.

The base recovery rate for a disease is generally equal to it's progression
rate. In the above example the character would heal damage from the
disease at a base rate of 1 box per two days.

How's that sound for a start?
