Okay, I think this is what I'm going to replace the system in Grimmy with
unless someone can find some big holes in it:

Free Spirits can use Karma to advance their Force or the Spirit Energy.
Only one point of Force -OR- Spirit Energy can be purchased at a time.
The cost regardless of which is being purchased is equal to the new
(Force + Spirit Energy) in karma. At any given time, a Spirit's Spirit
Energy may not exceed the spirit's Force. If anything permanently
reduces the spirit's Force below his/her/its Spirit Energy, the Spirit
Energy is also reduced accordingly.

My preliminary examination indicates that this system makes it cheaper
for a free spirit to aquire a high Force if it doesn't care about Spirit
Energy but more expensive for the spirit to max out Spirit Energy ... (A
spirit with F6, SE1 costs 25 karma versus Grimmy's 35 but a F6, SE6 costs
75 versus Grimmy's 55.)

Incidently, if you shoot for a certain rating, it won't matter which you
raise first, Spirit Energy or Force, the overall cost will be the same
...
