I was wondering about the idea of a magician turning himself
into a free spirit, perhaps through a ritual and/or blood magic. Has
anyone written rules on this sort of thing, and has this shown up
anywhere in sourcebooks as a rumor?
Obviously, certain very powerful "souls" or whatever you
prefer to call them are strong enough in some cases to live on as a
free spirit* after the body has moved on, so there appears to be some
basis for it, but I was wondering about less powerful beings, such as
humans or non-immortal elves, succeeding at this.

Well, there's the quick and easy way.

Just kill yourself and you'll be a free spirit. Of course, it's only
temporary (for as many hours as you have Essence or Magic).

There is one canon reference to this happening: Lucero
in 'Beyond the Pale'. She died and was summoned back to life
by Darke as a blood spirit. She then went free.
Go there : http://members.aol.com/talonmail/
It's Steve Kenson's Web Page.
Click on Articles. You 'll find tons of great material including
stuff that was left out of 'Magic in the Shadows' such as rules
describing how magicians can manifest when projecting. Neat.
It might provide a basis for the abilities of a magician turned spirit.
I hope this helps.

Actually, I do have a really good idea of how to do this with pre-existing
rules for SR2, as well as probable options in the upcoming stuff. More at
that time perhaps if someone reminds me at that time.

Dunkelzahn, didn't become a free spirit as far as I can tell ... he was
turned into one. It makes more sense if you read Earthdawn. He was
summoned by what'shername and then Named thus becoming a Free Spirit. :)
