Hey, Andrew. Don't worry about your english. I'm from the U.S., and
we barely speak it here:-]
In answer to your rigger question, I can't give you exact numbers,
but I'll give it a try.
An LAV, in layman's terms, is a very large, aerodynamic, brick. It
takes a lot of thrust to propel this brick over the ground. That's
flying what they call 'nape of the earth'.
If you wanted to gain some altitude, you could, but the energy
expenditure needed to generate the necessary thrust would be enormous
[and expensive]. It could hover like a Harrier jet, so I'd guess it
would use the same amount of fuel [note: Harrier's don't spend to much
time in hover mode, usually only when taking off and landing].
I think in the first Shadowrun book written by Charette, the
rigger's LAV was able to get at least 50 feet off the ground during a
running battle. The engines in LAV's are designed and built by the same
people as those who design and build the ones for jet air craft [One of
the best being the Rolls Royce Pegasus]
Sorry, if I was kinda obscure, and hoped that cleared things up a
little. Maybe someone else can add a few vital statistics to the thing.

I agree...one thing to consider is that they may have figured someway to
use ground-effect type lifting body. That way, when the LAV was at
cruising speed relatively close to the ground, its efficiency would be
higher.

Harriers even prefer to have a short take off, preferable with a ski-jump
like hump at the end of the runway. It allows them to carry alot more
weapons.

IMHO, a LAV would generally stay low for efficiency reason (and detection)
and only go high when it needed to...kind of like afterburners on jet
fighters. You only use it when you need it.

Welcome (this is your second post, but I don't think anyone said it the
first time:). The Bull-bot shall greet you shortly:)

I don't know how high the LAV (are we talking t-birds, like the Banshee,
or the Federated-Boeing Eagle?)

Actually, your English isn't too bad at all. It's certainly better than
some people I know (US public schools suck):

"Hammer's Slammer's" by chance? The series by David Drake? A definite
good action read in my book (no pun intended... really). Also has some
good stuff on heavy ground-effect vehicles.

It's just angled thrust... the lower you are to the ground, the less it
needs to be directed toward keeping you aloft and the more you have to
direct backwards for speed. The higher you are, the more thrust needs to
be dedicated to maintining the altitude of the "flying brick".

I recall one such LAV in the RBB that was designed that way (with
wheels). It could "go to ground" to cut it's signature and consurve
fuel, then fire up the jets for faster movement and versatility.

I think it would also depend greatly on how much power you have
available.

The LAV from RBB that I think you are thinking of, is the Banshee. The
book states however, that the wheels are "unpowered" control wheels for
more stable manoeuvering. This means that the Banshee still needs to
maintain it's thrust to keep moving, otherwise it just sits there on the
wheels playing target <g> So, unfortunately, no reduction in signature
or fuel conservation.

The Bull Bot has, indeed crashed recently to the real Bull "Getting a

occasionally, messages like "Hi I'm new" get missed.

The Bull Bot sends his apologies and will endeacor to do better, but will

Hey, don't worry about it. :) I have a nasty habit of setting my
fingers off before my brain is in gear too. <g>

Also, where I steal ideas from so many other games, I occassionaly (as
people here know) get a tad confused as to which item is from which
game. Don't worry about it, it happens to all of us sooner or later :)

Unless you were refering to the Red Ranger Scout ACV;
an air cushioned vehicle with a top speed of 450 and
Sig of 3 that could use powered wheels instead to
give it a max speed of 90, but a Sig of 8 and four
times the mileage.

They get _real_ nervous over "cheap" goods. One of them bought a
Panther Assault Cannon, and an HMG cheap, with a few ammo boxes thrown
in for good measure. Not my fault he accepted what the military were
going to trash. :)

So they don't buy "sale" anymore <grin> But I gave them a price of
780,000 nuyen for a fusion pack for matey's ACPA, if any of them see
this 19.95 price, I'm a dead GM. ;)

Just wanted to drop a note to the list and say hi.

I'm new to the list, but have been playing and thoroughly enjoying

My handle/nick is from my favorite SR character, in fact.

Looking forward to lots of good info from this and the other
